A rundown of what’s new to cinemas around Beijing.

Out now in cinemas

Bohemian Rhapsody (波西米亚狂想曲)

After premiering Stateside last October, the four-time Oscar Award-winning box office hit Bohemian Rhapsody comes to China (with an unfortunate, but unsurprising censorship of its homosexual content – three minutes in total). The biopic traces the meteoric rise of the legendary British rock band Queen and frontman Freddie Mercury through their iconic songs and revolutionary sound, leading up to their famous performance at Live Aid.

So Long, My Son (地久天长)

Spanning three decades, the Wang Xiaoshuai-directed So Long, My Son delves into the bitter struggle of two Chinese families, a broader commentary on the swiftly changing society that they are swept up in. The film's obvious ambition, dramatic heft, and intimate look at Chinese life made this epic drama a strong entry at the 69th Berlin Film Festival earlier this year, where leads Yong Mei and Wang Jingchun took Silver Bears for Best Actress and Best Actor respectively.

The Crossing (过春天)

The Crossing centers around 16-year-old Peipei, who resides with her mother in Shenzhen but goes to school in Hong Kong. In order to support her single-parent family and make a long-awaited trip to Japan, Peipei begins a risky undertaking as a 水客 shuǐ kè, a black market mule to illegally transport items from Hong Kong into Shenzhen. Unlike more typical coming-of-age stories, first-time director Bai Xue's The Crossing uses Peipei to address a number of China's deeply rooted social issues.

Upcoming release

Durante la Tormenta (海市蜃楼)

This Netflix release from Spanish thriller master Oriol Paulo, Durante la Tormenta AKA Mirage, tracks one woman's 72-hour quest to discover the truth about her son's death 25 years prior. A time traveling thriller, Mirage moves at a brisk pace, deftly weaving numerous plot threads in a way that will leave you on the edge of your seat until the credits rolls.

Out Mar 28. Screened with Spanish and Chinese subtitles. Scan/Extract QR code above for tickets.
