How do you like your eggs? Be it poached, sunny side up or scrambled, Chunxiu Liu’s Eggee knows how to appease your eggy needs.

The newly revamped brunch spot was opened two years ago under the name
Yu Cafe by Ruai “Molly” Chao near Chunxiu Lu’s The Crib as a charming, but comparatively limited café specializing in Chinese tea and fusion desserts (black sesame mousses and the like, which are still available). The minimalist-chic ambiance hasn’t changed much, aside from some cheeky paintings of hard-boiled eggs and cushions resembling fried yolks on the sofas.

The entrance of this Chunxiu Liu restaurant is certainly tough to miss

But the menu is another story entirely, thanks to their dozen-odd, organic egg-heavy new brunch dishes. Must-tries include the eggs benedict with smoked salmon; a great take on the classic with the requisite gooey egg yolk, tender salmon, and soft English muffin combining into a hearty mess of colors and silky textures. At RMB 78 it's a bit steep, but it is a decently sized portion, and the flavors and freshness of the ingredients make it worth forking over a little more.

Though they aren't the first Beijing restaurant to serve shakshuka, Eggee pulls off the North African dish with aplomb

You'll get more bang for your buck with the shakshuka (or the unfortunately titled "North African egg meal" here). Competing with the likes of The Rug and Caravan, Eggee's rendition features baked eggs with North African salsa and Thuringer sauce, along with sprinklings of coriander, chili, and cumin. For RMB 78, you'll get the whole frying pan which is easily big enough for two patrons to share.

Other, seemingly simpler items, like the cheesy scrambled eggs (RMB 59) exceeded our expectations. The addition of shiitake mushrooms gives the dish a distinctive earthy flavor, while the cushy eggs and stringy cheese make for a comforting first-meal-of-the-day texture. The same goes for the croissant and scrambled egg with bacon (also RMB 59), whose feathery croissant and straightforward filling is easily enough to quell your morning cravings.

Finally, we treated ourselves to the FMB 49 bubbles pancake, which caps the meal off impeccably with fluffy pancakes, sea salt cheese sauce, and sweet black sugar syrup.

We're keen to return and try their scotch egg

Other items we'll be keen to try upon next visit include the sunny side up Susu chicken open sandwich (RMB 59, featuring sunny side up eggs, crispy chicken, hollandaise sauce, and greens on an English muffin), the scotch egg (RMB 38), and the "avocado breakfast" (RMB 59, made with soft boiled eggs, avocado, toast, lime, and mixed nuts; pictured in the lead image above).

From creative twists on simple classics to indulgent desserts, the Eggee team have hatched a surefire plan for brunch success in west Sanlitun.
