Sino Silver Screen: 'Marriage Story' to Release in China

Chinese distributor Road Pictures revealed on Dec 30 that the 2019 Noah Baumbach-directed Marriage Story will receive a Chinese theatrical release, though a release date is yet to be determined. A China poster of the film has also been unveiled. The film takes a compassionate look at marriage and divorce, with leads Scarlet Johannson and Adam Driver (pictured above) finding themselves in a gradually more embittered battle for custody. The film’s Chinese distributor Road Pictures previously released such internationally acclaimed arthouse films such as Shoplifter and Capernaum in China.

Directed by Johannes Roberts, the American adventure horror movie 47 Meters Down: Uncaged will hit Chinese theaters on Jan 10. The film follows four teen girls who are trapped by a group of deadly sharks after a dive into an underwater city of ruins, putting them in a fight for their lives to make their final escape. Sophie Nélisse, Corinne Foxx, Brianne Tju, and Sistine Stallone are cast in the lead roles.

By the end of 2019, there were five Chinese actors whose lifetime box office takings have exceeded the RMB 10 billion mark. Wolf Warrior 2 and Wandering Earth star Wu Jing topped the chart with a cumulative RMB 16.4 billion in box office earnings, followed by Huang Bo, who has played leading roles in such films as My People My Country, Crazy Alien, and Lost in Thailand and grossed RMB 13.2 billion in total. Du Jiang ranked third place, raking in profits for his supporting roles in “main-melody” blockbusters such as Operation Red Sea, The Capitan, Bravest, and My People My Country. Fourth place was taken by Shen Teng, who starred in Hello Mr. Billionaire, Never Say Die, Pegasus, and Crazy Aliens. Finally, number five was Deng Chao, the lead actor of Zhang Yimou’s Shadow, who scraped into the list with the help of his self-directed film Looking Up. His top-grossing movie was Mermaid, which grossed RMB 3.3 billion in 2016.
