Tim Hortons to open in Oriental Plaza WFJ
After announcing in summer 2018 that it would be opening 1,500 stores across China over the next decade, Canada’s largest fast-food chain and home to all things coffee and donuts, Tim Hortons, is finally due to land in the capital. A temporary storefront has been spotted in Oriental Plaza in Wangfujing, marking the first of what should be many outlets to come. Shanghaiers have had the brand since February last year, munching on a menu of Tim Hortons signature Timbits (donut holes to the uninitiated), sandwiches, desserts, and, of course, a range of coffee. There's currently no word on when the store will open.
Following the completion of its spring promotion, Dining City has now rolled out its Winner's Week, offering deals at China's most popular restaurants until Jun 21. In Beijing alone, diners can now experience premium service at 33 of the city's top venues with lunch deals from RMB 108 and dinner from RMB 198. Some of our favorites on the list include the wagyu foie gras burger at Bistrot B at Rosewood Hotel and the infinite dim sum lunch at Michelin-star restaurant Jing Yaa Tang in The Opposite House. Find the full list of participating restaurants and make bookings via the Dining City website.
Beyond Yakitori launches new dishes, deals
Topwin's purveyors of Japanese barbecue, Beyond Yakitori, has launched several new summer menu items such as charcoal-grilled Australian wagyu and pork shoulder with miso (pictured above) as well as half-price weekly specials, including their signature Beyond Scotch Egg on Mondays, grilled Australian wagyu steak on Tuesdays, and on Wednesdays, their white chicken foie gras. Read more about those here.
If that's not enough Yakitori for you, Nali Patio's Daruma has also launched a range of weekly specials from Monday to Thursday, starting 5pm each day. Those include half-price highballs on Mondays, half-price yakitori on Tuesdays, half-price kushikatsu on Thursdays, as well as any sake for 30 percent off on Wednesdays.
Afternoon tea deal at Morel's
If you're looking for something a little more elegant on these hot summer days, look no further than Morel's afternoon tea deal. For RMB 166 (a discount of 40 percent), two diners can feast on fruit, sandwiches, and cakes served on a fine china three-tier set plus, of course, requisite tea from Twinings. Spiffing!
Sanlitun's Mercedes me to close
After four years in Sanlitun at the foot of the Intercontinental Hotel, the Mercedes me store is to close at the end of this month. A source knowledgeable on the matter told the Beijinger that its last day of operation will be on Jun 30 and its closure is a "strategic decision not to renew the contract with the current landlord." The Mercedes me at Daimler Tower in Wangjing will be unaffected. For now, there is no update as to whether the brand will open another store in Beijing though a Shenzhen store is expected to be unveiled in July, joining the aforementioned Wangjing store as well as stores in Shanghai and Chengdu.
SKP food festival
Foodies will want to head to SKP and (the very futuristic) SKP-S malls between now and Jun 28 for their joint "Imaginary Kitchen" event, with deals from participating restaurants. There will also be a food truck in the dining area at B1 of SKP offering free food samples from restaurants in SKP and SKP-S and zongzi on sale for the upcoming Dragon Boat Festival. Read more about the food fest here.
