As we reported last week, The Hutong's annual Summer Fayer was delayed by one week and will be held this Sunday, 11am-4pm. The Fayre is in support of Hui's sanctuary, a pet sanctuary in urgent need. Learn more about the sanctuary and how you can help below.

Hui's Sanctuary is a volunteer-led dog shelter that finds itself in a very difficult situation (as it is soon to be demolished!) and we would like to combine efforts to encourage the cause by welcoming them at The Hutong in our coming Summer Fayre. Keep reading to know more about the work they do for rescued dogs in Beijing and the different ways you can help:

Shelter background

Hui's Sanctuary (慧领养), previously known as Cihan Nursing Garden (慈涵护生园), is a volunteer-based dog shelter based in Tongzhou District, Beijing. It was created by Mr. Hui, who set it up a few years ago personally and still runs it with the help of volunteers. Since its creation, over 1,000 dogs have been rescued, and over 800 have found their forever homes

At Hui's Sanctuary, they believe the shelter is only a transit point, from the horror from which many dogs come until they reach their forever family.

Every dog has their own story, but the majority of the rescues come from meat traders, breeding farms, and abandoned pets. At Hui's Sanctuary, they focus on providing each dog with the best possible life until they find their forever home.

This care comes from feeding, medical treatment, sterilization, and infrastructure cost, which are all covered by donations.

There are currently over 150 dogs in the shelter, of all sizes, types, and colors, and there are many ways in which you can help, firstly, adopt, don't shop! If you can't adopt right now, you can foster a dog in need, support them economically, volunteer at their base, or donate some food, crates or money to the shelter, any kind of help is welcome and highly needed!

Sadly, we have some very bad news: the shelter is being demolished!

With less than 2 weeks' notice, they recently found out that the area in which their shelter is located is being demolished, which means they urgently need to find forever homes or temporary fosters for all their dogs while they find a new location and get it ready. Over 60 dogs have found a home last weekend, but many more are still at the shelter in urgent need of help, get in touch to see how you can help!

Follow Hui's Sanctuary on WeChat be searching official accounts for 慈涵护生园 (cíhánhù shēngyuán) if you want to participate in any of their donation programs.

They currently run two different donation programs:

1.The first one is a monthly fee of 30 yuan for dogs' essential needs, they go directly to the purchase of food, vaccinations, and to cover medical bills.

2.The second option is their dog sponsorship program: with this, you donate 200 yuan per month towards your favorite dog in the shelter, you can name him/her, take them for walks, and help them in personally finding adopters.

Volunteering

Every day is a busy day at Hui’s Sanctuary! With over 150 dogs currently under their care, there is no time to waste by the volunteers, there are never enough hands!

Their experienced volunteers start having a look around the base, topping up water bowls, and checking that all dogs are feeling ok! Then the fun starts, as volunteers are never enough, dogs spend most of their time in the shelter without human companions, so your help is needed to give dogs the attention they need, volunteers go as often as possible to take them for walks, give them cuddles and lots of outside time, and many more tasks!

There is a task for everyone, cleaning water and food bowls, helping clean the crates, washing and trimming dog’s hair, brushing them, having fun with them, walking, running, helping feed them, you will never get bored!

Kids are also welcome, always under the supervision of an adult, and following the instructions of our volunteers.

The main purpose of the shelter is to keep the dogs as comfortable as possible while they find a forever home for them, so if you are not made for the shelter, you can help in many other ways, sharing their dog's posters so they can get adopted, going to their events, and donating. All donations go straight to cover the dog’s basic needs: food, medical treatments, vaccinations, and sterilization. So every yuan helps! Moreover, if you have any special skills and want to help them, let them know and they will surely think of some way in which you can support Hui’s Sanctuary!Raffle:The Summer Fayre at the Hutong is an opportunity to raise funds and awareness about their situation, and for that, we would like to organize a raffle of items donated by the different vendors present at the Fayre. If you wish to collaborate a bit, please let us know what you can donate from your products list. The raffle will be promoted among different groups, and the draw of the lucky number will be done during the event, so the winner can pick up the prize directly if attending.

Any way you decide to help is very welcome! Thanks in advance for your help and see you on the 27th of June in our Summer Fayre!
