Sanlitun’s Taikooli shopping centers are on a roll, reaching out fingers in all directions from their original stomping ground just across from Sanlitun Soho. After grabbing space for Taikooli North just above the main property, they’ve completely remodeled the old Yashow Mall, transforming it into Taikooli West, which is expected to open by year-end – hopefully in time for some holiday gift shopping.

Now, they’re taking the Northern venture even further with a new deal that Swire Properties, who owns Taikooli, has made with the Chaoyang District Government along with the Beijing Public Transit Group.

A Swire Properties representative tells the Beijinger that they are not yet ready to disclose details of the expansion as the deal is fresh off the signing table, so there are currently too many details yet to be worked out. All we know so far is that it will allow for a number of new openings, including some first-time brand arrivals to the capital.

The representative also declined to comment on what we can expect to see within the walls of Taikooli West.

According to the Beijing Evening News, the new parcel of land to be developed by Taikoo Li is just south of Dongzhimenwai Dajie and is currently used as a bus depot. The massive plot is significantly larger than any of the current Taikoo Li parcels that occupy other portions of the same city block.

In the bigger picture, the expansion deal is part of a greater plan for Chaoyang District, specifically to expand and integrate to so-called “international style belt” that will run from Sanlitun up to the Liangma River and eastward into what authorities are trying to call “the second Sanlitun” at Bahe – an area near the Northeast Fifth Ring that includes Langyuan Station, where the Beijinger’s 2021 Burger Festival will be held.
