Security checks in Beijing's subway
system will be tightened beginning Mon, Jan 24, according to the city's
transit authority. Beijing Subway advises passengers to arrange travel
plans accordingly and not to travel during peak hours, so as to avoid
longer wait times in security checks. The transit authority has also
advised passengers not to carry flammable, explosive, or other
prohibited items on city buses, as well as to minimize carrying of
liquids.
On Jan 20, the special office charged with the Double Reduction policy implementation in Xicheng announced that it had received reports from the public concerning
Xueersi, and found that the popular training center had organized
courses for some students over the winter holiday. Authoritities have
since ordered the school to cease all educational activities. The
school's actions were in violation of regulations and policies that aim
to stop students from taking part in after-school classes.
The opening ceremony of the Beijing
Winter Olympics is currently undergoing final rehearsals, according to
ceremony director Zhang Yimou. Zhang said he hoped the opening ceremony
would be simple and wonderful, and added that it should last no more
than 100 minutes.
