Beijing has always been and will probably always be a city of constant change. An especially good example for the dynamic nature of this metropolis is in the world of dining. The little backyard just off Xindong Lu suffered a great loss late last year, when the popular XL Bar had to close its doors after being in operation since 2014.

But the time for grieving didn’t last long, because at the beginning of this year, a new restaurant had taken it’s spot:
Blue Star. The new German eatery is run by Thorsten, former longtime manager of Schindler’s Tankstelle, another famous German restaurant located in the nearby embassy area.

While the bar and much of the wooden interior of XL have been kept, Blue Star keeps things decidedly fancy

While the layout of the bar remains unchanged, Thorsten has changed much of the interior design and decoration to give it a bit more "German touch" (in a good way), while keeping the cozy atmosphere XL Bar was so famous for.

First and foremost, Blue Star is a restaurant, and as such it offers a good variety of quality eats. Apart from some German and (East) European classics like schnitzel, sausages, goulash and flammkuchen, it also offers different kinds of fish and seafood, like seabass, shrimps, matjes (pickled herring) and salmon. Right now, it's officially "Spargel" season, which means you can enjoy that delicious white asparagus topped with a special sauce and side of potatoes.

Besides an ample menu, the restaurant also offers catering services, in case you're planning an event. Should you be working nearby, you can also enjoy their weekly set lunch promotion which includes a starter (soup or salad), a main course, a dessert and one drink for RMB 89.

If you're hankering more for a drink than a meal – no problem! Blue Star has kept XL's bar counter, and you can drop by for some German beer (Paulaner, Pilsener Urquell etc.), some schnaps (shots), a glass of wine or a non-alcoholic beverage.
