Now Beijing has a pretty decent number of Vietnamese restaurants and one thing that’s guaranteed to be on the menu at all of them is of course the famed Vietnamese dish phở. But what can be a little harder to find is the almost equally famous Bánh mì.

This Vietnamese style sandwich that sees a crisp French baguette filled with a range of meat, vegetables and pickled vegetables makes for the perfect lunch time meal or light dinner. So let’s have a look at some of the best places you can get yours in the capital.

Yueli Vietnamese

Hands down this has to be one of, if not the, best banh mi spot in Beijing because not only are their banh mi packed with flavor and generously filled, but they are also very reasonably priced as well. They also have a great range of fillings on their menu including two vegetarian options: Roast Eggplant Banh Mi (RMB 22.8) and Double Fried Egg Banh Mi (RMB 24.8). In the meat department the go to has to of course be the Char Siu Banh Mi (RMB 32.8), but if pork isn’t your thing they also have chicken and beef options too.

4Corners

Nestled in the hutongs just behind Houhai lies 4Corners, a restaurant and bar that serves up a mix of Vietnamese and Canadian cuisine. My personal favorite banh mi spot in town, they have four different banh mi on offer: Viet Meatball, Five Spice Pork Belly, Beef and Onions, and Viet Veggie (all RMB 55). I’d recommend the Viet Meatball, but honestly they are all delicious!

Susu

With now three spots in the capital Susu has certainly proved to be a favorite among Beijing’s residents. They have four different varieties of banh mi on their menu and to make more of a substantial meal of them. Plus, they all come with a serving of Viet Q Fries which are seasoned with lemongrass, sriracha mayo and optional chilli powder. They do Classic Meatball (RMB 88), No.10 Chicken (RMB 88), Veggie (RMB 85) and for a little bit of a twist on your usual banh mi a Q’s Banh Mi Beef Burger (RMB 88).

Le Little Saigon

Another little hutong gem, Le Little Saigon is a Vietnamese-French bistro that lies just west of the Drum Tower. Here they a rather more unusual banh mi on the menu which you don’t see at too many places which is a Tuna Banh Mi (RMB 48). Along with this they also have more traditional Pork Banh Mi (RMB 45).

Saigon Mama

This Vietnamese chain, originally from Shanghai, now has four branches spread out across the capital, so bets are there is probably one near you. The go to banh mi here is definitely the Saigon Combo (RMB 58) which sees both pork and chicken combined for the ultimate combination. But if you want to keep things more simple they also have Grilled Chicken (RMB 55), Grilled Pork (RMB 55) and Beef Banh Mi (RMB 58).

Pho Society

Up next is Pho Society, which has arguably the most diverse Banh Mi selection on this list. The most unusual options are probably the Smoked Salmon (RMB 68) or Pesto Chicken (RMB 58) which you’re unlikely to find as banh mi options at your standard Vietnamese joint. However, if you’d rather stick to something more traditional they also have classic options like Lemongrass Pork (RMB 60) or Chicken (RMB 58).

Pho House

Another one of the more reasonably priced options, compared to others on this list, Pho House is also a good spot for vegetarians with two different vegetarian banh mi on their menu: Tomato and Mozzarella (RMB 30) and the simply titled Vegetarian (RMB 25). For meat lovers they have the usual fare of Classic Pork (RMB 38), Grilled Chicken (RMB 45), Tuna (RMB 38) or for a slight twist on your normal fillings Grilled Satay Angus Beef (RMB 45). They also do a couple of breakfast banh mi sandwiches so be sure to check out those.
