2024 Black Pearl Restaurant Guide Awards 38 Beijing Restaurants

The 2024 Black Pearl Restaurant Guide – which can be seen as China’s version of the Michelin Guide – was released on Jan 25 and saw 38 Beijing restaurants on the list. Launched in 2018 by Meituan-Dianping, the annual guide evaluates restaurants based on culinary skill, consumer experience, and inheritance and innovation. 

Instead of stars, the Black Pearl Restaurant Guide awards diamonds: three diamond restaurants are "must visit once in a lifetime", two diamond restaurants are "perfect for special occasions", and one diamond restaurants are "great for family/friends gatherings".

Of the 38 Beijing restaurants on the list, there is one three-diamond restaurant, three two-diamond restaurants, and 34 three-diamond restaurants. This number is the same as last year, however there have been some changes with some restaurants losing diamonds and new ones gaining diamonds. 

In addition to the diamond awards, this year saw the first "Dish of the Year Award", which was created to encourage food research and innovation along with the promotion of local ingredients. Ten dishes were selected for the award, including two from Beijing restaurants: Ling Long with their Oyster and Beef (蚝与牛 háo yǔ niú) and LU STYLE for their Braised Jiaodong Knife Fish in Soy Sauce (酱焖胶东大刀鱼 jiàng mèn jiāo dōngdà dāoyú). 

It’s interesting to compare the Black Pearl Guide with the 2024 Beijing Michelin Guide, with a key difference being that of the three restaurants awarded three Michelin stars, two of them – King’s Joy and Chao Shang Chao – didn’t receive any diamonds while the third, Xin Rong Ji (Xinyuan South Road), only received two diamonds. 

Another big difference is that the only restaurant to be awarded three diamonds, Gastro Aesthetics DaDong, only received one Michelin star in this year’s guide. There is some cross over though, and you can see the full list of 2024 Black Pearl Restaurants below with those that were also awarded stars in the 2024 Beijing Michelin Guide, being highlighted in bold.
