Sanlitun Hotel & Dining Spot Opposite House to Close This June

Vincent R. Vinci theBeijinger 2024-04-13

After 16 years in Beijing, Sanlitun’s The Opposite House will be shutting its doors for good this summer.

According to an announcement from the hotel published on their WeChat (see below), the space will be converted into an “innovative retail landmark” by Taikooli Sanlitun. The hotel is officially set to close as of Jun 30.

The Opposite House is far from just a luxury home away from home, it was also a place to gather. Such gatherings at the establishment ranged from parties and happenings at the hotel's various restaurants to art exhibitions and openings which brought Beijing’s local and expat literati to the hotel’s lobby.

Some of our favorite shindigs were the many pop-ups at Superfly – especially those by Shanghai's Yaya's and Julu Gin last year – to guest shifts by renowned bartenders at Union (lead image). Each of these offered guests the chance to sample something new, be it Italian-Chinese fusion or tantalizing alcoholic concoctions, on a regular basis.

The hotel has hosted pop-ups and events with F&B brands like Jing-A and others on a regular basis

Union and Sichuan eatery Superfly were rounded out by more F&B venues around and within the hotel. These include Italian specialists Frasca and the one Michelin starred Jing Yaa Tang, noted for its take on Chinese classics like Peking duck and Kung Pao chicken.

All this combined to make it a favorite not just among Beijing expats and locals, but celebrities as well like Victoria Beckham, Blake Lively, and Justin Beiber, who all stayed at the hotel during their times in the capital. Sadly, the hotel's venues, events, and memories will be saying goodbye as well when the hotel shutters.

Whatever comes out of the soon to be former Opposite House, it’ll be sad to see the hotel – and all the great eateries, activities, and art events they hosted – gone for good. Be sure to visit them before the end of June and pour one out for this Sanlitun stalwart.
