Beijing to Build New 3.5 Ring Road

2016-02-26 theBeijinger

If you’ve ever tried to take the third or fourth ring road to get anywhere at rush hour, you’ll understand the pain. Now, in order to ease congestion, Beijing will build a new ring road in between the two, Global Times reports.

The roads will total to add up to 28 kilometers to Beijing's extensive tarmac network, and will be completed during the current Five Year Plan: 2016-2020, a report released by the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport said.

Not only will these new expressways hopefully reduce traffic on the roads most clogged during 2015, but it will also connect the new administrative center in southwestern Tongzhou as well as the new airport in Daxing district.

In other transport news, the Beijing subway network is ever-expanding: there are three high-speed subway lines that are still under construction, which will run trains capable of reaching 160 kilometers per hour. On top of that, by 2020, all subway lines in Beijing are expected to have trains every two and a half minutes.
