Soylent has temporarily halted shipments of its new Soylent bar amid reports that “a small number of our customers have experienced gastrointestinal issues” after consuming it, but says the cause of the problem remains a mystery.

"It has recently come to our attention that a small number of our customers have experienced gastrointestinal issues after consuming Soylent Bars. "Until we are absolutely certain our products are safe, they will not be shipped," added the company, which temporarily halted shipments of its flagship beverage Soylent 2.0 last fall after discovering a manufacturing glitch which caused mold to grow on the exterior of some bottles.

Consumers on Soylent’s online discussion forums have reported a range of issues from nausea to vomiting and diarrhea shortly after consuming the bars, which - according to the soylent website - were manufactured at Betty Lou's in McMinnville,  (although references to Betty Lou's have since been removed from the website, which now simply states that soylent products are manufactured in the US ).

Some commentators have speculated about whether  (a widely used and exhaustively tested sweetener), or soy protein isolate (which like all proteins can cause GI issues in some consumers), are responsible.

However, both ingredients are also used in Soylent 2.0, and many of the consumers reporting GI problems note that they are regular consumers of the beverage and in some cases have also eaten the bars without experiencing any problems, suggesting that there could have been issues with a specific batch.

Resistant weeds are not unique to glyphosate

As for pesticides, he said, it is a well-documented fact that insecticide use has gone down significantly since the introduction of Bt crops engineered to produce their own insecticide from the soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt).

Mark Hughes, president at ingredients marketing firm Anderson Partners told FoodNavigator-USA that it would be interesting to see if the post prompts other brands - that might share Soylent's views, but  - to speak up.

Dr Bruce Chassy,  at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, also welcomed Soylent's comments, although he observed that the blog was saying "nothing that academies, scientific societies, expert groups and science communicators like myself haven’t been saying for years."

Dr Wayne Parrott, professor of crop science at the , was slightly more optimistic, however: “As companies have shied away from marketing GMO products directly to consumers, consumers have not had a chance to see how much they could benefit by GMOs. By not being able to put their hands directly on a GMO, . Hopefully this is just the begining of products that directly benefit consumers.”
