That's Shanghai - August 2016 Issue Out Now!

The August issue of That's Shanghai is out now – paper-and-ink-form citywide.

They’ve spent years training for a sport that they love. Our cover story this month focuses on four athletes’ transitions from being at the top of their game to adjusting to their new roles in life.

Tennis legend Li Na announced her high-profile retirement just months after winning her second Grand Slam title at the 2014 Australian Open, due to a chronic knee injury. Since then, she’s become a mother and is acting as the ambassador for various brands and promoting the sport that made her famous. After winning Olympic gold medals in boxing (light flyweight division) in the 2008 and 2012 games, Zou Shiming retired from the national team to pursue a career in professional boxing while making appearances on various reality TV shows.

Once an observed trial cyclist on the US national team, Christopher Pitts now finds himself helming the kitchen at one of Shanghai’s most popular restaurants. Former Canadian national champion kayakist Stéfanie Vallée is now applying her experience in the water to her career as a painter and an executive coach. Elsewhere in the magazine, our Food Editor Betty Richardson explores some of Shanghai’s best bowls of noodles; turn to p62 for some serious slurping action. In the Art section, Zoey Zha sits down with legendary British choreographer Matthew Bourne (page 30), to speak about his gothic rendition of Sleeping Beauty, which will be gracing the stage of Shanghai Cultural Square from August 16-25.

On page 12, Arts Editor Andrew Chin catches up with Photofairs Shanghai director Alexander Montague-Sparey for a preview of Asia’s largest art festival dedicated to photography on September 8-11 at the Shanghai Exhibition Center. In the Lifestyle section, I visit the gorgeous home of longtime China expat, author and former J. Walter Thompson CEO of Asia, Tom Doctoroff (page 20), just before he embarks on a new adventure in New York.
