Shanghai Expat Detained After Brawl in Jing'an
By Jonty Dixon
A 4am fight that occured on June 6 has resulted in one Eastern European exchange student by the name of Rov serving a three month detention in Shanghai. We bet his parents are thrilled.
The altercation took place in Jing'an District and was between Rov and another man of Western European origin by the name of Kleibrink. (The full names and nationalities were not revealed).
But as far as this dual is concerned, the West did not win, ending with Kleibrink getting knocked unconscious by a 'particularly forceful' Eastern gale.
The assault occurred outside a bar on Yanan Middle Road (the name of which was not released). According to reports, Rov claimed Kleibrink made obscene gestures towards him at the bar. This was denied by Kleibrink who claimed Rov grew agitated after the former spoke to the latter's girlfriend.
In addition to his three month stay in a Chinese prison, Rov’s family has offered USD27,000 as compensation. That's one very expensive bill (and surely very proud parents) for a night out on the town.
