PHOTOS: Transportation Mayhem Caps off October Holiday

Golden Week is over and with its conclusion came a tidal wave of domestic travelers eager to return home.

The rush was expected, considering this year’s October Holiday was predicted to be the busiest on record – with over 55 percent of China’s population projected to travel. As we previously reported, crowds swarmed tourist sites across the People’s Republic and the nation’s travel infrastructure was put to the test.

October 6 was the beginning of the journey home for tourists in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, with a sea of people descending on the city’s East Railway Station...

“I knew we should have bought our tickets in advance,” said at least three people in this crowd.


Beijing’s subway system saw large crowds yesterday (October 7), with hordes of returning travelers eagerly attempting to get home:

Travelers transferring from the Beijing Railway Station to the city’s metro system yesterday.

Commuters leaving Guangzhou were also affected by the end-of-holiday madness…
