Construction of Shanghai's Metro Line 14 Begins
By Rachel Deason
Phase one of construction on Shanghai metro line 14 started on Friday, with eight stations across Putuo, Jing’an and Huangpu districts being built over the next few months.
The construction is part of Shanghai metro’s '20 by 2020' plan, which aims to add six more lines to the current 14 in the next four years.
While the additional line, connecting to such popular stations as Jing’an Temple, Huangpi Nan Lu and Yu Gardens, will ease congestion at major tourist destinations, roads in the area may experience increased traffic during construction of the line. Police have announced new traffic arrangements around the stations, which will influence routes on Wuning Lu, Wuding Lu and Huashan Lu. Accordingly, several bus lines may be rerouted or cancelled during construction.
Line 14 will extend into Pudong New Area, with construction of the Lujiazui station set to begin sometime in 2017.
