Top 6 Art Exhibitions in Shanghai This Week

1. Top 5 Pop Culture Poster Show
To follow up their Happy Birthday Elvis Fest, Beryl Chung and crew are celebrating pop culture in all its forms in this community art event. For Top 5, a range of artists have been invited to create five posters using only five colors reimagining their five favorite pop culture icons in their own style. Getting into the act, Ruijin Cajun are serving their five favorite dishes and extended happy hour deals. Surf-rockers The Psyders and the Come Correct crew will rock the opening party.

2. Wany Yi: Yi Ri Guang
Taking its name from Hang Yu’s verse that refers to a change of time during one day or as part of the eternal cycle of time, Shanghai born artist Wang Yi reinterprets the classical gaze within painting by deliberately overlaying contastic colors to create dynamic works.

3. Zheng Lu: Re-sist-ance
After solo exhibitions at MOCA, Taipei and Parkview Green Museum last year signaled a new stage in his art, the celebrated artist Zheng Lu's first large-scale solo exhibition in Shanghai celebrates his new style. Re-sist-ance features six new works produced this year that was inspired by the six categories of Chinese categories and explores the philosophy of image making.

4. X-Tree
After hosting the Kissmass tree three years in a row, Xintiandi welcomes this new impressive 3D light installation that is inspired by the French designer studio’s concept of promoting environmental protection. The 25-meter tall installation mixes metal material with LED lights, visual projections and electronic music for a futuristic holiday celebration. Each night there will be a Christmas light show on stage.

5. Fireworks
This group exhibition focuses on Magda Danysz Gallery’s expertise in video art, street art and Chinese art. Internationally acclaimed artists JR and Yi Zhou will share space with top Chinese artists like Hua Tunan (pictured), Li Hongbo, Huan Rui, Shi Ningfang and more.

6. Dai Mouyu & Sun Yue: Timeline
This dual solo exhibition pairs Guangdong born Dai Mouyu’s new ink-pen works (which features characters for the first time) with young Beijing born artist Sun Yue’s sparse porcelain pieces.
