Shanghai's The British Kitchen is Dessert-ing Us
By Betty Richardson
First Amelia's closing, then Mr Harry – and now we've just found out The British Kitchen has ceased operations. It's a terrible month for British food in Shanghai. An F&Brexit, you could say. The beloved artisanal bakery, founded by expat James Stockdale in 2012, was famous for classic, decadent and delightfully retro British sweet treats.
No more chunky caramel brownies!
Last orders for lemon drizzle cake!
Meiyou millionaire's shortbread D:
Sayonara carrot cake with cream cheese frosting :'(
The British Kitchen was also a regular at markets and events around the city, later stocking cafés like Sumerian, EGG and Spread the Bagel and establishing their own online shop, not to mention scooping Best Cottage Industry at the 2014 That's Shanghai Food & Drink Awards.
Stockdale, an architect by training, tells us that while Shanghai won't be getting any more British Kitchen bakes, he is currently writing a cookbook on British baking. So who knows, maybe we'll be baking chocolate beetroot and salted caramel cake for ourselves sometime in the future. Definitely wouldn't be as good as this work of art though.
