Shanghai Metro to Ramp Up Security This Summer
By Bridget O'Donnell
Shanghai Metro police are introducing a bunch of new measures this summer to increase subway security.
Among some of the changes include new bag examination machines that automatically detect explosives and liquids. Does this mean wining and dining on the Metro might soon be a thing of the past?
Zaijian, Metro picnics?
Metro police say the new machines will "improve the efficiency and accuracy of security checks." The machines are currently undergoing trial operations.
Also coming are new security doors capable of detecting passengers' IDs. That will no doubt make it more difficult for people to try and dodge fares by climbing over (or under) the turnstiles.
Look out, fare dodgers
According to Shanghai Daily, authorities have already confiscated over 24,000 banned objects this year and caught 688 suspects who have pickpocketed or caused other offenses on the train platforms.
Earlier this year, authorities busted nine people believed to be from two separate pickpocket gangs for stealing more than RMB100,000 worth of propery from passengers at Shanghai Railway Station and People's Square stations. Many of the thefts were captured on CCTV.
