Beijing's New Airport Will be the Biggest in the World
By Justine Lopez
We’re all waiting for the day our new airport officially opens its doors…because that airport is going to be amazing.
With five stories, seven runways and its very own bullet train station, we knew this place was going to big. But what we didn’t realize is that Beijing’s fancy new airport is going to be the largest aviation hub in the world.
It is expected that 100 million passengers will travel through the new airport every year. Last year, Beijing Capital International Airport handled 90 million passengers.
Because of the increasingly high volume of passengers that fly in and out of the capital, having two major airports is welcome news to many.
"There are demands to add hundreds of flights in Beijing every day that get refused because we're running out of resources. The city is capable of running dual hubs," said Liu Xuesong, the general manager of Capital Airports Holding Co.
According to Ma Chongxian, vice president of China National Aviation Holding Co., this will be the first time in history that a city has two aviation hubs of this scale.
Construction on the airport began in 2014, and the airport is scheduled to be completed in 2019. It is estimated that the airport will cost USD12.9 billion.
