Ofo Accused of Disguising New Bikes to Defy Shanghai Ban

Shanghai's transportation commission is investigating allegations that Ofo is defying the recent ban on new shared bikes on the road.

According to SHINE, a recent news report claimed that new Ofo bikes were spotted around the city, disguised as used bikes so as not to rouse the suspicion of the commission.

The city issued the ban this August, in an attempt to unclog its streets of shared bikes. Since then, the shared bike companies were prohibited from putting new bikes on the streets. A similar ban was put into effect in Beijing.

Ofo will be questioned later this week by the commission, though the company maintains its innocence.

“We are not adding more bikes. We have reduced the number of bikes in Shanghai by 50,000,” said Liu Wei of Ofo’s publicity department. “The bikes in the report were replacements for scrapped bikes.”
