It’s now easier than ever for foreigners based in Shanghai to get residence permits. Well, it’s easier for some foreigners. 

As of last week, Shanghai made it possible for 'highly-skilled' foreigners to obtain resident permits in just three working days. And the best part is, all they have to do is fill out an online application.

So who’s eligible? 

The new system was put in place to attract highly-qualified professionals such as skilled workers in high-tech, financial and research and development fields, and employees based at multinational companies that are based in Shanghai, China Daily reports.

"High-end professionals employed by the 8,818 enterprises on a list seen as key leaders in Shanghai's quest to become a global technological innovation hub by 2030 will also become beneficiaries of the new measure," said Xin Wenke of the Exit-Entry Administration Bureau.

These highly-skilled applicants can now submit an application online at crj.police.sh.cn. The process should only take three working days for those who qualify. Prior to this, applicants had to go to the exit-entry office where they would often be interviewed and asked to submit additional documentation. The process would typically take up to seven working days.
