Until May 27: China International Comedy Festival 

The 3rd annual China International Comedy Festival hosted by the Kung Fu Komedy team continues this week, as preliminaries wrap up and the finale show approaches. Don't miss your chance to see the competition go down with judging from Tucao Dahui's (吐槽大会) Shiyan, Weibo superstar Guda Baihua(谷大白话) and the festival's 2017 winner Zhouqimo(周奇墨). More info here

May 25-26: Whose Line is It Anyway? 

Punchline Comedy brings back the always rib-tickling talents of Whose Line Is It Anyway? to Shanghai on May 25 and 26. Expect plenty of improv hijinks as the UK’s Andy Smart, Stephen Frost and Niall Ashdown, and Irishman Ian Coppinger build the show based on audience suggestions. The show will be held at Cages on Friday, May 25 and Blossoms at the Kerry Hotel Pudong on Saturday, May 26. Check out our interview with Ian Coppinger here.

May 25: Buco Street Party 

Buco kicks off gelato season with a curbside party this Friday. They'll be debuting new gelato flavors born from inspired collaborations with the likes of Hot Box and Yao Lu of Union Trading Company. Expect nitro cocktails from Spirits Box, a street side photo booth and free gelato samples aplenty.

May 25: Ben Pearce  

British DJ and producer Ben Pearce is a versatile musician whose style blends deep house with elements of punk, metal, hip-hop, funk and soul. He's toured through the world, from Ibiza to Miami, and released his latest EP, Eclipsed, last year.

May 25-27: Lebensraum


In this surreal play inspired by the 1920s silent films of Buster Keaton, two men create a mechanical maid to do their chores for them, projecting their desires and neuroses onto her. Things escalate when the maid develops a mind of her own and refuses to be bossed around. The German title, meaning ‘living space,’ is a literal and figurative reference to the small world in which the two men live.

May 25-27: Edges

East West Theatre’s latest production is Edges, a unique show exploring themes of emotional uncertainty and change, with stories that span runaway fiancés and expectant parents, the fear of death and the fear of never having lived. For this dinner show held at Tex-Mex restaurant Bordertown, ticket holders get a free drink upon arrival and can also take advantage of a specially prepared menu that includes vegan options.

May 26: METZ

Described by the New Yorker as ‘punishing, noisy, and exhilarating,’ acclaimed Canadian punk-rockers METZ return to Shanghai for their latest show with Split Works. They’re touring in support of their latest album, Strange Peace, which dropped last September.

May 26: AV Party

Atomic Visual Studio celebrates five years as promoters and producers of digital art with a massive birthday party at Modern Sky Lab. The line-up features some of the leading lights of Chinese independent music, like Nova Heart (pictured), Shao and Duck Fight Goose, whose sets will all be paired with striking visuals.

May 26: Boys Noize

One of the highlights of a huge month of music for Shanghai promoters STD is the return to China of German producer and DJ Boys Noize. The prolific producer has worked with everyone from Felix da Housecat to Skrillex, and has played every major festival, including Fuji Rock, Lollapalooza and Coachella three times. Catch his unique and uplifting show at Arkham.

May 27: Ceremony

Comprised of former Skywave member John Fedowitz and other alternating band members, Ceremony comes to Shanghai as part of their Asia tour to promote the album East Coast, which just dropped last week. Head there for their brand of disorted, psychedelic post-punk.
