Muji – the Japanese retail company – has been slapped with a fine of RMB200,000 (USD31,311) for labeling some products with the country of ‘Taiwan,’ Sixth Tone reports.
The fine was issued by the Shanghai Administration for Industry and Commerce, which stated that Shanghai-based Muji stores had not properly inspected their shipping labels and had violated China’s advertising laws.
On August 5, Muji imported 119 packages that were labeled ‘country of origin: Taiwan’ in Chinese, according to a statement by the Shanghai Administration for Industry and Commerce. The products were then sold at Muji’s stores and its Taobao flagship store.
It’s unknown how many of these products were sold. Muji has since changed their packaging and has stopped selling the mislabeled goods.
