Shanghai Issues First Orange Alert for Heat

ThatsShanghai 2019-06-24

By Yuzhou Hu

Last week, we welcomed plum rain season. Nevertheless, instead of incessant downpours, we are set to experience increasing heat over the coming days. At 9.43am today, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau released the first orange alert for heatwaves for this year, as reported by Kankanews.

The orange alarm, the second in the three-tier alarm system (yellow, orange and red), suggests that within the next 24 hours the temperature will reach 37 degrees Celsius.

Due to the subtropical ridge from the West Pacific, the temperature of the city is currently on the rise. The mercury soared to 37 degrees Celsius in most districts in Shanghai on Tuesday. Other areas maxed out at a blistering 35 degrees Celsius. Expect temperatures to hit 37 degrees on Wednesday as well.

When the orange alert is activated, citizens are advised to avoid outdoor activities in the afternoon. At the same time, children, the elderly and those who need to work outdoors for extended periods of time are reminded to take necessary precautions against the high temperatures.

Fortunately, the scorching sun may be subdued thanks to the plum rain season, and we can expect showers to start Thursday, according to The Weather Channel. That being said, the temperatures will still hover around 32 degrees Celsius, so prepare for humid and rainy days ahead.
