WATCH: Passengers Caught Dodging Fares on Shanghai Metro
By Bridget O'Donnell
A recently surfaced video shows a steady string of passengers dodging fares on the Shanghai Metro.
The video, allegedly captured at Jiading Xincheng Station on Line 11 at around 5.30pm on August 20, shows several people ducking underneath the turnstiles to avoid subway fares. Up to seven people can be seen avoiding fares in the span of 10 seconds.

After the video was widely shared on Chinese social media, the Shanghai Metro Group increased security presence at the station.
Just two days later, security at the station busted a pair of passengers attempting to evade ticket fares at around the same time as the first incident. Upon investigation, the caught passengers confirmed that they were among some of the fare dodgers in the original video from August 20.

The two were fined RMB90 for their actions. It's unclear if the other fare dodgers from the August 20 video were ever tracked down.

It's not an isolated incident, either. On its WeChat account, the Shanghai Metro group released screengrabs from surveillance footage capturing similar incidents at the station. In both cases, the passengers were caught and punished.

If caught, fare dodgers face big fines. You've been warned.
