Popular VPN Returns After Month-Long Hiatus

ThatsShanghai 2019-06-23

By Ryan Gandolfo

Good news for VyprVPN users: the tech company’s virtual private networks are open for business after being blocked by the Great Firewall in early December.

According to a representative of Golden Frog, the company responsible for VyperVPN, the VyprVPN Technology team has been dealing with the “new blocking techniques implemented by the Great Firewall,” noting that service has been restored on “VyprVPN Windows, Android and Mac Apps.” While this comes as a relief to paid subscribers of the VPN service, it is worth noting other paid VPN services, such as ExpressVPN and Astrill, have remained in operation throughout this time. The iOS VyprVPN app is still blocked at press time.

A man in Guangdong was recently fined RMB1,000 by Chinese authorities for setting up and using an unauthorized VPN. Current Internet regulations in China state: “Computer information networks conducting direct international networking shall use the international access channels provided by the national public telecommunications networks of the Ministry of Posts & Telecommunications.”

In 2017, the PRC’s top ecommerce platforms sold illegal VPNs on their platforms before the Cyberspace Administration of China asked the companies to carry out a “self-examination and correction.”
