'Don't Beautify Photos' US Consulate Tells China Visa Applicants

ThatsShanghai 2019-06-23

By Ryan Gandolfo

The visa office for the US Consulate General Shenyang released a very comical – yet informative – reminder to visa applicants last month.

In a post on their official Weibo account (@美国驻沈阳总领馆签证处), the visa office reminded present and future US visa applicants to upload a genuine, unedited photo when applying for a US visa.

The post, which was made on January 31, also included two tasteful photos of a bear and a fox. The bear can be seen with a ‘before’ tag and the fox with an ‘after’ tag, poking fun at the beautification tactics people use to transform their image.

Read an English version of the reminder below (translation by Ryan Gandolfo of That’s):

“Dear applicants, when filling out the DS-160 application, please upload an unedited photo. Please do not change your skin color, slim down your face, increase the size of your eyes or wear cosmetic contact lenses to avoid immigration officials from being unable to recognize you and, therefore, being denied entry into the United States.”

Most of the comments below the visa application reminder seemed to appreciate the humor behind the bear and fox comparison, although a few commenters claimed that the post was a form of discrimination. One netizen wrote “This is discrimination against Chinese people. What’s the meaning behind these animal pictures!” Another Weibo user replied, noting “Your profile picture is also an animal.”
