A woman in Chenzhou, Hunan province risked her life after injecting herself with fruit juice in the hopes that it would lead to a healthier lifestyle.

According to Xiaoxiang Morning Herald, the homemade fruity concoction caused the 51-year-old, surnamed Zeng, to suffer liver, kidney and lung damage in late February. As a result, she was admitted to the Affiliated Hospital of Xiangnan University’s intensive care unit for five days. Zeng blended a smoothie of 20 different kinds of fruits, placed the mixture into an intravenous drip and then proceeded to inject the liquid into her veins.

Zeng knew something wasn’t right after experiencing a rising temperature and itchy skin. Later in the evening, her husband noticed her increasing discomfort and took her straight to the hospital after finding out about the infusion.

Doctors and nurses rushed to cleanse her blood using dialysis, injected clotting agents and antibiotics. After five days in the ICU, Zeng’s condition improved and she was later referred to the kidney unit of the hospital and was eventually discharged.

According to South China Morning Post, she had an avid interest in unconventional health treatments. “I had thought fresh fruits were very nutritious and it would not do me harm by injecting them into my body,” Zeng was quoted as saying. “I had no idea that would get me into such trouble.”

Liu Jianxiu, the attending doctor, warned that experimenting with health practices that lack proficient scientific basis might cause vital organ damage and even death.

The story has blown up on Weibo with over 29 million people following this unusual incident under the hashtag #OldWomanPutsJuiceIntoVeins.

Some users have bizarrely praised Zeng’s decision to inject herself with fruit juice, as one netizen posted “She who knows not fears not! I admire her courage as well as her intelligence!” However most people seem to be of the thought that this lady is extreme about healthy living. One person voiced their opinion, writing “Is this the latest diet fad? Medical knowledge has yet to spread.”

Just to be clear, under no circumstances should you inject yourself with anything without the guidance of a licensed medical professional.
