One of China's most popular social dating apps, Tantan, was removed from multiple Android app stores over the weekend, as reported by a number of Chinese news outlets. According to Technode, as of Monday morning the app is only available for download via the Apple app store and Xiaomi app store.

In an official response quoted by Sina Technology, Tantan said that the app had been taken off digital shelves because of violations and that they would be taking a period of time to undergo “self-examination and self-correction.”

According to multiple users, downloaded versions of the app are still working as of press time. On April 16, nine different social media apps were shut down as a result of erotic and obscene messages being shared on those platforms. Meanwhile, on April 19, some Tantan users reported that they had come across prostitution advertisements on the dating app, according to Nanchang Evening News.

Tantan was launched in April 2014. The app received attention for its Tinder-like swipe format and was later acquired by Momo, another social dating app and competitor, in February 2018.

Netizens have come out in support of the decision to take Tantan down from app stores, with one Weibo user writing “The people on Tantan are all abnormal...” while another user chimed in with “It’s time to fix it, there are too many scammers.”
