PinYin is a Language Tool, not the Language Self

Don't Start from PinYin to Learn Chinese

PinYin is a phonetic annotation tool, it was introduced into Chinese language in 1958, it is not the language self, foreign learners should pay attention to this, do not misplace it.

Furthermore, we should not start from PinYin to learn Chinese, the direct reason is:

PinYin study requires to remember each word's tone, it is very difficult for beginners.

Since a PinYin tone is an index of standard 4-tone sound sequences, if students can’t pronounce these PinYin 4-tone sequences, they aren't able to compare, to distinguish, to tell and to remember the tones, then learning PinYin tones is not doable.

Native Chinese never use PinYin

1. PinYin was introduced into Chinese language in 1958, before that, in thousands of years, no PinYin existed in the Chinese language.

2. 0-3 year-old babies learn Chinese speaking directly from parents, no pinyin involved at all.

3. Nowadays, Kids learn fluent Mandarin by watching TV, internet videos and go to kindergarten.

4. Kids learn PinYin at 6+ years old, at that time, they are already fluent in Mandarin.

So kids use Mandarin to learn PinYin, not the other way around.

From ancient times to nowadays, native Chinese never use PinYin to learn Chinese speaking, it is for sure.

Starting from PinYin to learn speaking is a wrong method 

PinYin decomposes each word sound to two elementary sounds: 1 initial and 1 final, and use English letter as PinYin letters.

PinYin includes 23 initials, 24 finals, 4 tones and spelling. 

1. PinYin letters are the same as English letters. 

So, foreigners read PinYin with English sounds and tones, and it is difficult to uncouple them.

2. A PinYin tone is an index of PinYin standard 4-tone sequences

PinYin study requires to remember tones word by word, it is actually not doable for beginners.

PinYin standard 4-tone sequences was defined by people, which are not nature sound sequences. Foreign students need learn to pronounce them. 

If students can’t pronounce these PinYin standard 4-tone sequences, they aren't able to compare, to distinguish, to tell and to member the tones. 

So learning PinYin requires student to pronounce PinYin 4-tone sequences well first, otherwise, learning PinYin tones will be very difficult, actually not doable, like using spoon to take noodles, most efforts are wasted.

That is the reason foreign students need to learn Chinese speaking directly first, like Chinese kids, then learn PinYin. 

Reciting short sentences is an effective way to learn Chinese speaking directly.

Reciting short sentences to remember sounds & meanings of words has been proved to be an effective way in past thousands of years, it is also suitable for foreign learners, we already have many successful cases.

PinYin blocks the way of 

Chinese writing & reading learning 

1. Starting from PinYin to learn Chinese, foreign students normally consider PinYin as the Chinese language, and reluctant to learn Chinese characters/words. 

2. In many textbooks, PinYin appears at the top of Chinese words, students' attention is always at PinYin, and can't focus on Chinese words. 

In that way, starting from PinYin to learn Chinese blocks the way of Chinese writing & reading learning, as a result, most foreign students are not able to read and write Chinese after a long time study.

PinYin input erases the memory of Chinese writing

PinYin input processes sound information; it does not process word components and structure information.

So, the PinYin input method does not help to practice & memorize Chinese writing. 

If word composition and structure information do not get renewed and practiced in daily use, they will be gradually erased from the memory.

So, if students want to learn Chinese writing & reading, they should not use PinYin as the daily input method.

PinYin is not Chinese language

Chinese words are the indispensable core part 

PinYin is a Chinese phonetic annotation tool, it is not the language self.

Chinese words/reading is the indispensable core part of Chinese learning, regardless your learning goal.

1. If you read Chinese, then you can learn Chinese by yourself anytime and anywhere.

If you can't read Chinese, then you will always depend on others to learn speaking, not to mention high level of Chinese study.

2. Reading is an alternative way to practice listening and speaking. 

Reading can be carried out anytime, anywhere, with various contents at any level, convenient and cheap. Reading is a good way to practice listening and speaking; 

3. Reading can consolidate and maintain the listening and speaking capability of foreign students.

After graduation, it could be difficult for foreign students to find someone to talk in Chinese. Without continue practice, their Chinese speaking capability will soon fade away. Reading can help to consolidate and maintain listening and speaking capability. 

Therefore, Chinese words/reading is the indispensable core part of Chinese learning.

To learn Chinese, even if you only want to learn Chinese speaking, you should also learn words/reading as soon as possible.

"Chinese speaking is the first requirement of foreign students";

"Some students just want to learn Chinese for basic communication"; 

None of these sayings can be a reason for foreign students refusing Chinese words/reading learning, letting alone that Chinese writing & reading is not difficult at all with HeChinese study method.
