Welcome or welcome back to Shanghai! The new year already came and the spring as well. (It's still cold, but it is spring now.) No matter you are new here or you lived here for a long time, there are some things you would concern.

1

                                                                      Climate

I did say it is spring but still cold now. well, it is spring in Shanghai. Basicly, the features of climate in Shanghai are long summers and winters, short (or no) springs and autumns. The highest temperature in summer is around 39℃ while the lowest temperature in winter is around 0℃, but seldom snows. Due to the sea, it is humid all the year here. The rain season is in summer. And there is a period that rains the most in June and July every year, which is called梅(méi)雨(yǔ)季(jì) Perhaps you will find it's hard to survive in winter without the AC. Because of the humidity, people feel it's difficult to warm up even when moving. So, get prepared.

As for short but random spring and autumn, just don't be in a hurry to pack your winter/summer clothes. Sometimes you can experience four seasons within one week. : ) By the way, don't get a cold.

2

Housing

Compare to other cities in China, Housing costs in Shanghai is rather high. In general, the rent depends on location. Rooms in central districts like Jingan, Changning, are expensive. If you want to share an apartment in the central areas or near subway stations, the average rent is around 3500 per month. You can also find an agency to make things easier.

3

Shopping

It’s easy to go shopping in such a big city. Malls and supermarkets are everywhere. If you are a shopaholic, you must go to People Square, Lujiazui and Nanjing Road. If you just want to buy daily necessities, you can just go to家jiā乐lè福fú(Carrefour). And there are also import supermarkets. You can buy European products in Ole’, or Japanese products in Apita or Takashimaya.

More and more foreigners learn to use(táo)(bǎo)even before they come to China.(táo)(bǎo)is like Amazon in Chinese version, but much quicker. You can find almost anything you want in(táo)(bǎo). All you need is a smart phone, Alipay account, a bank card and wifi.

4

Recruitment season

It is the high season of recruitment in spring. Quite a lot of people start working of change their jobs just after the Chinese New Year. So there are plenty of vacancies in different industries. Some of the companies want the employees to start working immediately after the vocation, so they prefer deciding everything in November or December, but you still can find vacancies after the holiday. Generally Chinese college students graduate in June. Most of them start to look for jobs in March or April. So it's the best time to find a job in the whole spring.

5

Places to Visit

On different websites, the recommended places to visit are almost same. Like the Bund, Pearl Tower, Yuyuan Garden, Lujiazui, Tianzifang etc. And Shanghai is known as the city where the most activities are held. There are exhibitions, concerts and plays all the time. You can download apps like Smart Shanghai to follow the latest events in Shanghai. In addition, cities and towns near Shanghai is also worthy to see. For instance, it’s easy to visit cities like Suzhou, Yangzhou, Wuxi during weekends. It just takes about 1 hour by high-speed Railway. As for the famous water towns, Xitang is the first choice. If you want spend a night there, you can book a room on Airbnb.
