Low-Prep Activities for Adults: 15 Words

We start our TEFL Lemon Low-Prep Series for teachers who, for whatever reason, have limited time to plan classes for their students. This isn't to say that these lessons are lower-quality (they aren't), these are excellent classes for your students to learn English, but yet require little or no preparation from the teacher.

Low-prep activity for teens and adults: 15 Words

This is a very simple activity for teenage or adult learners. All you need is some paper, pencils and some imagination!

Materials: Paper, pencils/pens.

Skills: Vocabulary, writing, reading aloud, listening. Speaking (if doing the roleplay component)

Time: 1 hour to 2 hours

What to Do

1. Hand each students three small bits of paper. Ask them to write an interesting word on each bit. If you have under six or seven students, give them five bits of paper each.

2. Put all the words into a bag.

3. Mix up the words inside and get a few students to pick some words from the bag. Have your students write them on the whiteboard. Choose 15 random words from the bag.

4. Ask your students to write a short story. They should try to use as many words from the whiteboard as possible.

5. At the end, ask your students to read out their stories. Vote on the most fun or interesting story!

This activity is fantastic for teen and adult students and they'll really enjoy stretching their vocabulary and hearing the other stories. Best of all, this is a winner every time if you don't have time to plan or prepare something from the book. Perfect for a rainy day!

Additional Idea for this Low-Prep Class

If you have a lot of time left over, want to introduce a speaking element, or want to make this a two-part lesson, then choose a good story and make a role-play from it!

- Students create their own characters in the story
- Bring props from home
- Set up different groups to role-play different stories
- Video your role-play!

There is so much you can do with this low-prep activity....all you need to start with are some paper and pencils!

Have fun!
