A Welcoming Speech at the Opening Ceremony on behalf of Alumni

Ladies and gentlemen, our distinguished leaders, professors, and teachers, and dear alumni and classmates,

Good evening!

First, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Director Zhang and Mr. Yang, who offered me this valuable opportunity to deliver a speech on behalf of my alumni in this ceremony. It is of course a great honour but mixed with a sense of shame, which I will explain later. This is Wuxing Liang from 2022 cohort.

Yesterday we altogether mourned in a state funeral. I pay attribute to our late Premier Keqiang Li who made a promise not to stop serving his people until death stops him. Now he committed his words. Wish him a real rest in peace. I also pay attribute to another distinguish doctor, who had contributed to fighting the recent public health crisis and then satisficed his own health, Mr. Zhunyou Wu. Wish him a sound journey back home. The last, as an internationalist and a fan to “The Friends”, I congratulate Mr. Mark Perry, or Chandler Murial Bing, who are in the heaven. Wish him a happy afterlife full with wonderful jokes.

Confucius said, “Without knowing life, how can one know death?” Actually, without knowing death, how can we understand life? Death is so critical to life as the final termination. Will it be a full stop, a questioning mark, or an exclamation point in your essay of life? How the meaning of life could be manifested if the music will never stop? It is the death that defines the life. In view of that, heroes would rather satisfice their lives for a cause whilst treating death as if they simply return home; in view of that, wisemen never feel sorrow for the death whilst celebrating the final departure by singing and beating on a basin.  The diminishment of any individual leads to the renewal of collection.  A Chinese saying goes that a family shall be thriving if you see thousands of coffins come out of its door. Seemingly contradictory, it is actually dialectical We Chinese people understand this truth, and it is the very root of our philosophy that had been making our civilisation survive and thrive for thousands of years, without ever perishing in the river of history.

Yes, an opportunity is integrated within a crisis. My fortunate association with this doctoral program could be traced back to May 2021, when I was quarantined in Shanghai and browsed all over Simplified Chinese new media. A small piece of advertisement hidden in Harvard Business Review (Chinese version) attracted me. Bored and bored, I dialled Mr. Yang’s phone simply for a chat with real person. Over phone, he talked me through with his warm voice about the lofty concept of shaping an "Executive Scholar" and the association of PSL, Tsinghua, and NAI.  I can do nothing but give it try. Many of the alumni are winners in business and return studying for fun or self-improvement. As for me, I have read some books, failing to fully understand them; I have fought some battles in business, losing more than winning. So I am ashamed to make this statement, being the least qualified alumni.

I was supposed to be part of 2021 cohort, but the public health crisis dragged me down. After my rushing back to Beijing, the yellow code still blocked me from attending the ceremony of 2022. I missed it perfectly again. Today is also an opening ceremony to me. And once again, I would like to thank the teachers for their tolerance and support to have me. Being admitted to this programme has opened my horizons. The classmates have rich experiences from various sectors, and actively contribute to the programme via discussing interesting business topics; the professors are wise and knowledgeable, as high as mountains to climb. In the August session, when alumni from three cohorts were sitting in one classroom, they really showed their capabilities, as hidden dragons and crouching tigers. We learned and grew together; we drank and had fun together. Whether in the classroom or at the dinner table, my classmates and teachers have taught me a lot, which helped me to make some progress in both academic and business. Specifically, talking about our 2022 cohort, I would rather stop here to avoid embarrassment of boasting ourselves. Modesty shall allow us progress further.

This decision, it seems so far, one of my rare wise choices. And what appeals me the most is the seriousness and sincerity of professors, especially of French professors, which reflects some unique characteristic related to culture. One famous Chinese scholar, Mr. Hongming Gu, once commented on the Chinese and French cultures: "Chinese and French cultures are the only pair in the world that are most similar. The nobility of both stems from the noble spirit, which grants them a superior position to overlook other cultures”. Our President Xi taught us to 'look at the world level', without looking down, of course not looking up. Being proud of our won Chinese culture whilst able to deeply understand others; being inclusive to absorb others’ strength into our own’s. For the ultimate objective of embarking on China's own path of enterprise management, this is precisely the goal of the programme and our mission. This is why this programme could stand out with such a distinctive feature.

Director Zhang once said that my choice was a big recognition of the programme. Obviously, he flattered me – please note that the moment was after drinking. Right, Director Zhang? Persistent and progressive, low-key yet effective, minimalist whilst not simple. Actions speak louder than words, and reputation at heart speaks louder than publication. For over a decade, hundreds of alumni have been successfully shaped up into executive scholars. The programme has already set a high bar without proving anything. Excellence, no need to say too much! Our alumni are like colourful leaves, and the solid trunk behind us is the programme, deeply rooted in the fertile soil of Sino-French cultural connection.

As for the Sino-French connection in a broader sense, we shall not forget President Emmanuel Macron's recent state visit to China last year amidst the geopolitical tensions, where he enjoyed Chinese music and tea with President Xi; we shall not forget the late President Jacques Chirac's passion to our one of greatest poet Du Fu – and he is also my favourite. This time when I took a transient from Paris to Beijing, the lights started shinning while the night was coming, and the airport has already been decorated with Christmas makeup. Welcome to Paris! The greeting is in Chinese Character. It was these Chinese characters leaping into my eyes that remembered me General Charles De Gaulle, also the late French President. He admitted China with extraordinary courage, making Franch the first among Western countries to establish diplomatic relations with China. Together with our leaders of Chairman Mao and Primer Zhou, they jointly planted the seeds of Sino-French cooperation with long vision. Those respect leaders are long gone, but the great cause began to spout. Until now, it has turned into a strong tree with a deep root, lush leaves, and wonderful fruits.

A commencement for colleague students is a ceremony to celebrate their closure of academic course, while marks actually a significant beginning, a beginning of moving from the ivy tower to the real battle filed. An opening ceremony has a word of “opening”, which means a start point to embark a wonderful adventure with new friends, classmates, and teachers. Virtually, it also includes concluding. Just like the English word of January, it is stemmed from Janus the Roman god, who has two faces forward and backward: one facing the new year; one looking back the past year. Opening a cause by concluding; making progress via innovation. Such a motto is particularly applicable to us as “freshmen” with older faces who return back to campus, yet seeking a new break-through based on old accumulated experiences.

2023 saw the passage of the public health crisis and then a ramping up to a new stage, where "The majestic gates and roads are as iron as iron, and now we are stepping forward from the beginning". Next year will mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and France, making our already extraordinary projects even more magnificent and meaningful as a piece of chant highlighted in the choir of harmony. As alumni, I would like to encourage you to take full advantage of this precious opportunity on this platform, and sincerely wish everyone success in the following research and prosperity in the careers within this big family!

The posture of the green leaves is extraordinary; the trunk of the tree is becoming stronger. And as for the friendship between China and France, it remains eternal, having gone through the rains and storms!

Thank you all for your attention!
