周三好，在今天的推送开始，小青想先为大家介绍中大青年的新栏目——insight。
与中大青年传媒insight部同名，该栏目旨在向读者们提供各类跨文化资讯与报道，如果你也热爱英语与外国文化，请不要错过。
这是insight与大家见面的第一篇推送，让我们一起走进John Holcroft的插画世界——

在这张漫画里，你看到了什么？
穿着正装的人在夜以继日地奔跑着，永远没有停下来休息的那一刻......
你想到了什么？
没错，是备受争议的996工作制。
随着经济社会的快速发展，企业成为经济领域最活跃的因素，996成为一部分公司，企业员工的工作常态，它剥夺了员工休息的权利，压榨了员工的劳动力，影响到员工的生活质量和健康水平，已受到社会各界的关注。而一位漫画家则通过漫画的形式，发出了反对（protest）的声音。

就像每一个活泼可爱的小孩一样，John从小就耐不住性子，爱拿家里的日用品涂涂画画。他想成为一位艺术家，看到卡通图案就乐得不得了，收到别人送的图画书或者画笔就欢呼雀跃。

长大后，John开始追逐自己的梦想。1990-1992年，John在Norton College Sheffield学习平面设计，学习内容包括插图，排版，设计，动画和摄影。离开学校后，他开始从事平面设计的工作，不过不久后，他意识到这个选择有点欠考虑了。由于当时的技术变革，作画形式从使用纸笔作画走向数字化。
1996年，John正式成为一个自由职业者，但由于数字知识实在是太缺乏了，他只能不使用电脑而是用丙烯颜料进行作画，直到2001年，John才开始拥抱技术，加入数字化的潮流。自此，他的创作风格开始发生翻天覆地的变化。到了2010年，John形成了他独特的“screen print”的创作风格，受到全世界的瞩目。

John的作品也受到过他人的影响，他曾说过，他很崇拜David Cutter、Mark Ryden、Edward Hopper等艺术家，没有他们就没有现在的John。
作为一个受到业界认可的好插画家，John平时也是业务繁忙，随手就能列举一大堆与John有密切合作的大客户：FT, Radio Times, Guardian, TES, Radio Times, Waitrose Magazine, Management Today, TUC, The Big Issue, The Times, The Economist, Walker Books, Reader's Digest, Cathay Pacific, Wall Street Journal, Oxford University press......
John Holcroft 以其极具讽刺性的插图而为人称道，他的作品往往能够抓住现实生活的痛点，第一眼看到这些插图时，我们可能会忍俊不禁。但当我们欣赏它们的时候，就有可能因为这些嘲讽与自己的生活过于相关而感到不自在。从画中，我们看到了自己或疲惫或贪婪的影子。有时候又会因自己的渺小而感到些许心酸。下面，我们就一起来欣赏一下他插画里典型的几个主题吧。

Dull and Exhausting Work
What’s job? Is it something that you devote yourself to? Or is it just a means to make a living? Without passion, work is just a torture. The illustrations below are satirizing the modern work. Let’s have a look.

The nurse is worn out under work pressure. She’s trapped in her job and seems to strain herself excessively. The selection of blue impresses us with great sorrows and stress.

The disciplined workers from all walks of life look like products from the factory. The highly organized modern society forces all workers to fling themselves into work and repeat the same actions, just like machines.

The clerk who has wasted half of his life and his passion for work seems to be controlled by the negative thoughts in his mind. It’s interesting to compare the little staff with the great shadow behind him, which stands out his weakness under great pressure.

He’s not just a couch potato. He has already become a part of the coach. In many works of John, roots always stand for an irresistible force that stops the people from fleeing away from something.

Endless lust

In this illustration, beauty is not a natural characteristic but a product of consumerism. Every part of the body is covered with goods. When we judge beauty by its price, we lose the value of beauty.

The craze for money has been the most common and simple lust of human since it came out. Its value is beyond itself and becomes the ladder to status, fame, privilege and so on. But if we just climb the ladder of money, we may lose what we really take seriously.

There’s nothing more delightful than receiving a lot of “thumbs-up” in your WeChat, weibo or Facebook. No matter how upset you are, you can gain recognition and rebuild your self-value out of “thumbs-up”. That’s the charm of it.
John Holcroft的漫画反映诸多现代社会发展的弊病和社会问题。我们生逢其时，在科技蓬勃发展，经济高速增长的时代，我们追求钱包的鼓胀，追求便利的生活。
有人在眼花缭乱的商品中迷失，专注于电子产品无暇顾及世界的美好；有人生活在工作的重压之下，还时时刻刻担心自己在竞争中被淘汰(be knocked out)；有人只看得到经济利益（profit），甚至缺失了良知（conscience）与道德(ethics)。
John的插画给出了一个提醒，提醒我们反思，在社会发展的浪潮中，我们应该怎样应对。面对时代变迁带给我们巨大进步和层出不穷的问题，我们能否有能力从自身，从周身做出一点改变呢？
