Study Away

We recognize that due to ongoing travel restrictions and visa processing delays, many international students will not be able to return to Ithaca. To support these students, we have worked with academic partners at more than a dozen locations worldwide to create an onsite, in-residence Study Away option for eligible students. These international students will live and study at a local campus in their country or region while taking a mix of online and in-person classes. They will share co-curricular activities with their Cornell peers and have access to local facilities and services.

Study Away is an optional program for international students who cannot get to the Ithaca campus for the fall 2020 semester. International students may also opt for remote learning without participating in Study Away or request a leave of absence or deferral.

Administered by the Office of Global Learning (OGL), the goal of Study Away is to provide international students with a local Cornell community as well as access to educational facilities, services, and collaborations. We have identified Study Away opportunities through global partnerships with programs and universities around the world.

Students will stay in shared housing and participate in co-curricular opportunities while they focus on their Cornell online courses. Cornell students will also enroll in coursework from the local institution and engage with local students. Each location is uniquely different in scope and design, including student enrollment capacity, eligibility, course and co-curricular offerings, housing, and structure.

Please be aware that the unpredictability of the virus may impact plans in unforeseen ways. Study Away is contingent on the local university remaining open, safe travel in from surrounding areas, and that space is available. Interested international students should prepare to be flexible and adaptable to the likelihood of changing circumstances in advance of participation and while onsite. We strongly encourage students to read through all of the information about the program on this site and on Experience Cornell for your specific location(s) of interest.

Our goal is to meet the needs of as many students as possible. However, we cannot guarantee that Study Away will be available at every site listed below or accommodate all students who may be interested. Once you receive a location approval, you will need to commit quickly, so our global partners and we can begin to plan for how many students will be at each location. Please view the timeline below for further information.

This page will be continually updated to provide the latest information on the Study Away option. Please note, Study Away is available for the fall 2020 semester only.

Eligibility

To be eligible for Study Away, you must:

· be a Cornell international undergraduate, graduate, or professional studies degree-seeking student in good academic standing as defined by your college or school.

· have citizenship, residency, or another status that permits you to study in the country of your requested location without the issuance of a student visa.

· be physically in the country you wish to study or be able to travel to that country before the beginning of the fall 2020 semester.

· meet the individual eligibility requirements of your preferred location(s). See below for a current snapshot of location eligibility, subject to change.

· be enrolled in a minimum of 12 Cornell credits for the fall semester and enroll in at least one host-offered course.

Special note to graduate and professional studies students:

Graduate or professional students interested in Study Away should be in touch with their faculty/staff contacts for their program to determine if study away will be a good match for their program. Note that the applied or lab components for some programs may impact remote learning options impractical.

If you plan to receive support in the form of a TA/GA/RA/GRA assistantship, or as a graduate teaching/research specialist, please consult the Graduate School about funding eligibility and other funding options. If your assistantship appointment involves sponsored research there may be limitations on performing duties outside the U.S. or may require advance approval from sponsoring agency. Please contact your graduate field to determine if there are any restrictions.

Should you choose to apply to Study Away, note that selection of PhD and research master’s students will be determined upon review by OGL, the Graduate School, and your graduate department. For professional studies students, selection will include review by OGL and your college/school professional studies program office.

Note: Cornell's ability to offer a Study Away option for the fall 2020 semester at any site is subject to change or cancellation due to local public health conditions, governmental restrictions, and other factors. All open locations will operate with social distancing arrangements and other public health measures that will likely limit opportunities for large in-person gatherings and events.

Courses

All students should plan to participate in Cornell fall pre-enrollment as usual. If you are approved to Study Away, you will receive additional instructions regarding course enrollment.

Students participating in a Study Away opportunity should enroll in a minimum of 12 Cornell credits. Students are required to register for at least one additional course from the local program or university for all locations. The availability of local coursework varies by location.

Students will receive credit for host coursework where the equivalent of a letter grade of C or above is received. Host coursework will not factor into a student’s cumulative GPA. Cornell online course grades will factor into the cumulative GPA.

Only your college or school is able to determine how host-enrolled course credit will return toward your Cornell degree. In most cases, this will be elective or distribution credit. In some cases, credit could be approved as major, minor, or concentration credit, subject to college or school policy, but this is not guaranteed.

Housing

Residential housing is guaranteed and required at all sites; no independently organized housing is permitted. Additional information about housing will be provided upon selection.

Cost

Study Away students pay their regular Cornell tuition and local housing, food, and other required fees based on location requirements. An estimate of program fees is included in the detailed description of each location on Experience Cornell. Upon acceptance and commitment, a program budget will be finalized for each student and shared with them as well as the Financial Aid Office, at which time aid offers will be revised.

International Students who receive financial aid are eligible to seek funding for Study Away. Students should be aware that university-funded student employment opportunities are not permitted outside the U.S.

All applications contain the same questions, and all information related to the locations are within the Experience listing. There is no additional information within the application.

Please submit only one application. In your application, you will have the option of indicating two additional Study Away locations you are interested in (if applicable).

Selection is based on multiple factors, both in and outside of Cornell's control. These include Cornell and location eligibility and site capacity. If there is excess demand at any given site, selection will depend on college representation and date of application submitted.

If selected to participate, students must commit for the entire semester, including in-residence living, host course enrollment, and all other engagement and co-curricular expectations of the site.
