Artist Talk: Marcus Coates & Kuai Shen invites two artists exhibited in The Animal That Therefore I Am to introduce their long-term practice and research on non-human subjects. Marcus Coates’ works often apply performative strategies to explore the consciousness of animals. Kuai Shen focuses on the social and biological organisms of insects which he draws comparisons with human technologies.

Marcus Coates is a contemporary artist and ornithologist living in London. His practice questions how we perceive human nature through imagined non-human situations. Extensive knowledge and understanding of British wildlife have led him to create interpretations of the natural world and its evolving relationship with society. An aspect of Coates’ recent work sees him as a ‘useful social agent’ or problem solver. Through self-designed, sometimes shaman-like rituals informed by traditional cultures he consults a non-conscious world of animals and birds to seek relevant information.
Kuai Shen was born in 1978 in Guayaquil, Ecuador and now lives and works in Cologne, Germany. Fascinated by social and biological insect behavior, he works with ants to create audiovisual installations and performances, exploring the concept of insect aesthetics. His research crosses art and science, creating new relationships between humans and ants through the use of lively technologically-enhanced ecologies. His work explores ant relationships with parasites, microorganisms, and viruses in relation to mimicry, affects, and social contagions.
