The Chinese public have teamed up to help an impoverished boy whose hair became frozen after having to walk 2.8 miles to school on a harsh winter morning.

A total of 2,159,100.58 yuan (£245,200) have been donated to Wang Fuman and his school since a picture of Fuman and his icy hair became viral on Tuesday.

Wearing a thin coat, eight-year-old Fuman walked for an hour in minus nine degree weather to his school, then had to sit an exam in a classroom without heating.

Fuman's hair and eyebrows were coated in frost, and he has since been dubbed the 'Frost Boy'.

The heart-breaking picture of little Fuman has brought to the public's attention the massive wealth gap in modern China.

The Yunnan Youth Development Foundation said it had received donations sent in for Fuman or his ill-equipped school.

The state-run foundation announced it would manage the funds on behalf of them, together with the local Zhaotong Youth Development Foundation.

In a statement today, the foundation confirmed that the donations had totalled 2,159,100.58 yuan since they called on the public to help Fuman and his classmates on January 9.

Each student at the Zhuanshanbao Primary School, where Fuman studies, will individually receive 500 yuan ($57), the charity organisation said.

It also claimed to reveal the usage of the remaining funds in the days to come.

According to the headmaster, the temperature plunged to minus nine degrees suddenly

Some people have voiced strong opposition to the fact that the charity organisations are managing the money on behalf of Fuman, reported Radio Free Asia.

Critics concerned that people were donating money to Fuman, but the funds would end up being used to help other children - or even worse ending up in the hands of corrupted officials.

In response, a member of staff from Zhaotong Youth Development Foundation told MailOnline that not all of the donations had been sent to Fuman, and that the charity campaign was aimed to help children like Fuman in general.

The heart-breaking story behind the 'Frost Boy'

After Fuman arrived at his classroom, his hair and eyebrows were frozen. The boy's fate caught the attention of millions of people after a picture of his icicle hair became viral on January 9.

Fuman comes from a less-fortunate family. His father is a migrant worker in another city and his mother has abandoned him and his father.

A picture taken by People's Daily shows the boy putting his cracked hands against a marked examination paper. The examination paper said the boy had achieved 99 per cent in maths.

Fuman lives with his sister and grandmother in a bare mud house.

He told a reporter from Pear Video that he got frostbite on his hands because he had to help his grandmother do farm work.
