Shocking video of a groom in Central China who was severely flogged and had salt rubbed in his wounds during a hazing stunt on his wedding day has gone viral.
The footage shows the deep lacerations covering the groom's back before his wedding ceremony Thursday on a street in Shaoyang, Hunan Province.
Laughing guests had taken turns lashing the poor boy with thick leather whips as he hunched in his underwear - his bride-to-be standing by his side, the video shows.
The groom is then seen squatting next to a Mercedes as guests rubbed salt into his fresh wounds.
Locals told reporters the lashings were a local custom. "By beating up the bridegroom, it sends a message that marriage is not easy. Hope he can cherish it all," a guest told thepaper.cn.
The groom refused to verify the statement.
The traditional Chinese custom of hazing at weddings, or nao dongfang, has stirred controversy in recent years for incidents of violence and sexual assault.
