A Hangzhou man is standing trial after urging his girlfriend to commit suicide with him by jumping off a building.

The deceased, surnamed Mei, leaped from a 26-story building in the city of Hangzhou during a heated argument in November 2017.

The city's procuratorate is seeking a murder charge against her boyfriend at the time, surnamed Yu (born 1993), arguing he assisted Mei's death by encouraging her to jump with him.

Yu testified that he had stepped on the balcony of an apartment and threatened to commit suicide, Qianjiang Evening News reported on Tuesday.

Mei, who was eight years his senior, had provoked him, saying "Why don't you jump?" to which Yu replied "If you jump, I jump," he told the court.

She jumped and died despite Yu's best efforts to save her by performing CPR and calling 110 emergency response.

Yu had never planned to jump, he told Qianjiang Evening News.

"She had no reason to commit suicide… I was overconfident that she would not jump," Yu told the paper.

The Hangzhou People's Court is currently deliberating whether to convict Yu of a murder or involuntary manslaughter charge.

The count has yet to reach a verdict.
