A woman in Southwest China has filed a complaint with local tourism authorities after she was forced to bow in remorse to a "bus god" for defecating on a long-distance coach.

According to reports, the woman surnamed Wang was traveling on the packed bus through Guizhou Province on Friday.

Wang, who lives in Chongqing, had repeatedly asked for a bathroom break but the tour guide and the driver, surnamed Zeng, refused to stop.

Zeng later told media he did not hear Wang's requests to stop because he was "too focused on driving."

Wang relieved herself in a plastic bag, cleaned up and was apologetic. "If I could have held it, I wouldn't have behaved so shamefully," Wang said.

Wang said Zeng became furious and immediately pulled over. "He refused to drive further and kept cursing," she said.

The humiliation continued when Zeng proposed that Wang perform a ritual he said would rid the bus of the bad luck her bowel movement had attracted.

Zeng said the evil was compounded because Wang is a woman.

"It wouldn't have been a big deal if a man or a child defecated on the bus," Zeng told media. "But it was a woman. According to our customs, women's feces are disrespectful to the 'bus god.'"

To appease the deity, Wang was made to tie a strip of red cloth to the bus' grille and bow in apology.

Wang said she felt pressured to comply for the sake of the other passengers.

"I planned to deal with the problem with him when we returned from the trip. It is not good if his bad mood had affected the safety of the other 50 passengers," Wang explained.

Wang filed a complaint against Zeng and the tour agency after returning to Chongqing on Sunday.

Zeng said he was only acting out of concern for the safety of his passengers.

Local tourism authorities have ordered the agency to deal with the matter internally and are still handing the case.
