Worms inside waxberry not harmful! Just don't think of it

Here comes the best season for waxberry! Many foodies are fans of waxberry. However, rumors say that there are worms inside waxberry, so people shouldn’t eat this kind of fruit.


What’s the truth? Are there really worms inside waxberry and how to get them out of the fruit? Southern Metropolis Daily has conducted a test.

Which is the better way to expel worms, brine or water?

Test 1: To soak the waxberries into water for an hour.


Result: No worms found either by eyes or by macro lens.

Test 2: To soak the waxberries into brine.


Result:


A.Soak for 6.5 minutes: one small worm came out from overnight waxberries.


B.Soak for 13.5 minutes: some small worms came out from discount waxberries.


C.Soak for 30 minutes: worms found inside fresh organic waxberry while more worms found inside discount waxberries.


D.Soak for 50 minutes: No worms found in refrigerated waxberry samples. More worms found inside discount waxberries.

To sum up, worms found in 4 out of 7 samples which were soaked in brine. 10 worms found inside overnight waxberry samples. Fresh and packaged waxberries have less worms. Partially decayed waxberries may harbor a great amount of worms.


Why no worms found in refrigerated waxberries? According to experts, eggs of worms could be killed or hurt under low temperature. That’s why less imagos appeared in refrigerated waxberries.


Advice from experts:


If you’re not sure whether there are worms in waxberries, the first thing you do is to soak them into brine instead of putting them in the refrigeration or cleaning them with water. After soaking with brine, clean with water and then you can store them in the refrigerator.


You should know:


Fruit flies are commonly existed in many fruits. In terms of waxberries, fruit flies lay eggs on the green waxberries, and eggs would start to incubate when waxberries grow.


It’s said that fruit flies have strong fertility. They prefer to lay eggs on decayed places of fruit. Thus stale waxberries may have much serious problems of pests


Are these worms harmful to people’s health? According to experts from agricultural department, it’s not a big deal if people eat them. They are not harmful, though they might have psychological impacts.
