Want to spot a gangster? Look for tattoos, gold chains, say cops

Watch out for people with gold chains and big tattoos, police recently told residents of Jinan, Shandong Province in a public awareness campaign to fight gang-related crime in the city that has since kicked up mockery and discussions online. 

"Why don't the police just wait outside jewelry shops and catch people who buy gold necklaces," wrote Weibo user "Basansan."

The fashion statements are among a list of 29 profiled appearances and behaviors that a crack team of law enforcement officers has put together as part of a neighborhood watch campaign, local media reported. 

According to their criminal profile, gang members tend to wear a lot of gold and have "fierce-looking" tattoos. 

Other telltale signs: carrying knives and clubs, as well as strolling in large numbers at night around public places such as outdoor restaurants and barbecue stands. 

Such people are suspect of a laundry list of crimes that range from disturbing public order and extortion to drugs, gambling and prostitution, police said.   

Police also warned locals to stay vigilant of people who have stab wounds, a history of gang activity, or "suddenly move home for no reason." 

Tipsters are encouraged to report any suspicious activity and stand to receive up to a 200,000 yuan ($29,000) reward for information.

While some applauded the campaign, it was also met with criticism on social media, where some accused the cops of unnecessary profiling and stigmatizing of tattoos. 

"What's wrong with my tattooed arm?" wrote a Sina Weibo user.

"This is just discrimination. What if they are rappers or soccer players," said Sina Weibo user "chenzhen tongxue."

The notice follows a policy from a Chinese media watchdog in January banning tattoos and several other symbols of subculture from broadcasts.
