On Christmas Eve, a look-alike Santa Claus with red hat, white beard and bushy eyebrows went viral on Chinese social media platforms.
Chinese netizens had a good laugh comparing the plump old man from the North Pole, with a character from a Chinese film who sports a somewhat similar furry look.
Chinese actor Xu Jinjiang played the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) villain Oboi, whose makeup and costume are coincidentlyderivative of Santa's persona. Instead of a gift giver, Xu's character is fierce and ruthless with a shock of white facial hair.
"If Santa looked like him, I wouldn't look forward to Christmas," a net user joked on Sina Weibo.
The Putonghua name of the film's villain - Aobai in pinyin - sounds like "all buy" in English, which lead net users to ask Xu to buy them Christmas gifts.
Xu went along with the humor, posting his own season's greeting. "The old man with the red hat and white beard brings you best wishes on Christmas."
