Great Valued Dishes for Your Lunch Choice 午餐吃这些营养健康又划算

MORE magazine has been at Café Couture a few times already since the the venue opened in June last year. The venue has quickly developed a solid reputation on a menu that puts a twist on classic Western and Chinese favourites. I had heard all about the grilled cuts of premium Australian beef with mashed potato and seasonal vegetables, so I was really delighted to be invited to Café Couture. This was even more the case after being told I would be able to try a total of ten different dishes from their new menu.

As you might expect, their menu has a comprehensive drink list. There are a few different beers, among which, the better known are Delerium Tremens (45RMB) and Valkiria (45RMB), and wines are numerous in red, white and sparkling varieties. There’s Coffee, Matcha, Teas and milk teas like Earl Grey Milk Tea (30RMB) and Red Bean Milk Tea (33RMB), as well as other teas under the title of healthy teas. Fruit and vegetable juices of different combinations feature too. I ordered the Carrot, Apple, Celery and Pineapple (38RMB). Snacks are available too. These are especially good on the afternoon tea menu, which includes a Fruit Tray (68RMB) and Waffle with Seasonal Fruit (48RMB), although this only runs between 2-5 pm.

 

Since I didn’t have to mull over the menu and choose the dishes, once my drink arrived, I took a menu in tow for a squiz, and took a stroll about the venue. The juice tasted super fresh and really nice. On the back wall, there are windows looking out over a courtyard amid streets in the upmarket citizen centre of the new CBD. It really is a gorgeous venue, with a chic design and layout, but with homely and rustic textures. Café Couture is a bit hard to pigeon-hole in terms of genre. It looks and feels like a cafe/bar, owing to the fact that there is a bar, behind which is an espresso machine, along with a hoard of beer and wine bottles on display. However, a quick glance at the menu or at the hole in the wall through which a chefs head might poke, will reveal that it is a pretty serious restaurant as well. Then, attached to the cafe is a huge space filled with luxury furniture, so I guess its essentially a cafe/bar backing onto a furniture shop, or a furniture shop with a cafe/bar attached. Depends on how you want to look at it. Regardless, a walk about the expansive showroom is an interesting way to spend time after a meal or while waiting on an order.

 

First to arrive at our table were the salads. Grilled Salmon and Asparagus Salad (78RMB), Avocado and Vegetable Salad with passion fruit sauce (vegetarian) (58RMB), and Seafood Salad with Japanese Sauce (68RMB).

The orange salmon and asparagus was cooked perfectly and was complimented by cashews, tomatoes, lettuce, cabbage, yin mi, and a lovely home-made dressing of balsamic vinegar, honey and olive oil.

The Avocado and Vegetable Salad with passion fruit sauce is something that caters well for vegetarians, featuring poached egg, chick peas, tomatoes, quinoa, avocado, and bread. Here the home-made dressing with passion-fruit, olive oil, parsley, and vinegar stole the show, bringing some other less flavoursome ingredients bursting into life.

The Seafood Salad with Japanese Sauce combined Sol fish, squid, oysters, with kidney beans, tomatoes, walnuts, and cranberries. This was topped off with mustard dressing of milin, Japanese soy sauce, peanut oil, and chaiyu to achieve a fascinating combination of flavours.

Next was Braised Beef Tongue Red Wine with Rice (78RMB). The generous portion of meat was soft and tender throughout, and light juices ran nicely into the side of rice and vegetables.

One of the stars of the day was the Smoked Chicken Apple Sandwich (58RMB). Chicken, apple, lettuce, and curry mustard sauce are all packed into a scrumptious mixed grain whole wheat bread bun made specially by Mr Maimai, and served with a side of chips.

Another of my favourites was the Creamy Tomato Fish Fillet with Rice (68RMB). This featured a beautiful tomato sauce containing onion, tomato, garlic and light cream, and took the fish into another realm. It is served with lightly steamed vegetables, including zucchini, squash, broccoli, cauliflower, peppers, and mushroom.

The Seafood in White Wine Sweet Pepper Sauce Served with Rice (78RMB), in which oyster and squid are cooked in onion, red pepper, light cream, white wine, garlic, and black pepper, formed a beautiful broth that could stand alone as a soup.

Other notable additions to their stellar menu include Argentina Prawns with Creamy Lemon Sauce Pasta (78RMB), and Spanish Seafood Paella with Sweet Pepper (198RMB).

Café Couture is a bit tricky to find, but if you can get to the junction of Siji Road and Dangui Street, your on your way. From there, approach the building on the left side under the bridge crossing the road, and go up the escalator. You will see it on the right. Open 11am to 9:30pm. Menu in English. No smoking.
