The West Lake at Night

The lake on a clear day isn’t as nice as on a rainy one, and the lake on a rainy day isn’t as nice as the lake at night – this is something that the older generation in Hangzhou all says, and it’s true. On a rainy spring night travellers decorate the lake, holding small umbrellas in hand, walking from the Broken Bridge to the White Cuaseway at a leisurely pace, light from the buildings on both sides reflecting in the ripples on the water, with the lamplight among the trees on Gem Mountain visible in the distance. Some walk alone, some a couple of friends, chatting idly. It rivals walking among the shade of the green poplars.

Lotus Flower

“The osmanthus blooms in the autumn, and the lotus flowers extend for miles”– this is a description written of the area by Northern Song poet Liu Yong, and it remains true today. Hangzhou has many lotus blossoms. When visiting the West Lake in summer, you must admire the lotus blossoms. Walking in the shade of the paulownia trees along Beishan Road, you can see lotus plants and blossoms all along, sometimes in dense patches upon the lake, sometimes growing sparsely – more character than simple “endless green”. The lotus of the Forbidden City in the capital are raised in pots, but no matter how large of a pot you have, you can’t recreate such a scene as in Hangzhou.

The Unbroken Broken Bridge
There is a bridge on the White Causeway of the West Lake called the Broken Bridge which is quite famous. What is the reason for its name? On snowy winter days, no snow lies on the bridge, making it appear broken. In my humble opinion, it’s that on clear days sunlight reflects off the water and spills on to the bridge, and the light and dark contrast makes it look like a part broken. Added to this is the love story of Lady Bai, in which the two characters part at this bridge – the bridge may appear broken, but their feelings for each other are not.

Is the Lonely Mountain Lonely?

To the northwest of the West Lake lies an island, called Mount Gu (“Lonely Mountain”). At some time, the Xiling Bridge was built, connecting the foot of Gem Mountain to the western portion of Beishan Road. To the east, the White Causeway was constructed, connecting the Broken Bridge to the eastern portion of Beishan Road. Therefore, the Lonely Mountain was no longer lonely. The relief of the loneliness of the mountain reflects the human desire to not be alone, and the well-known phrase “the Lonely Mountain is not lonely” is a reminder of this sentiment.

The Not-long Long Bridge

On the West Lake in Hangzhou there is a bridge called the “Long Bridge”, but why? How long is it? There is no textual evidence for this name. According to stories, when Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai studied at the Wansong Academy, they accompanied each other for 18 li when parting, and said their final farewells at this bridge. They walked the bridge many times back and forth, having a long journey upon a short structure, making the distance feel greater. Thus we can see “long” is to be taken to mean having deep feelings.

Yang Gong Causeway

When I graduated, my friends and I decided to take a walk around the West Lake. When we got to this long causeway, one of my very tired friends insisted we rest, saying that he wanted to tell me the origin of the causeway as an excuse. It’s said that an official surnamed Yang looked over the fields around the West Lake, and seeing their encroachment, started to dredge and deepen the waterways to repair the Su Causeway, and build a new causeway to pair with it. It is thus called Yang Gong Causeway.

White Causeway

When Bai Juyi served as the feudal governor of Hangzhou, he constructed a causeway at the Qiantang Gate. “Spring sees peaches; summer, willows. Osmanthus bloom in the autumn, and winter is a time of fragrance” – this is a description of what the White Causeway has to offer in each season. The beauty and natural vitality of Hangzhou can be viewed along the approximately 1km-long causeway. Every year in March and April, the causeway is flanked on both sides by the swaying branches of willows, dark green, reflected in the clear water of the lake. The beautiful scenery will make you feel almost like stepping into a painting.

My Tears Are the Water

of the West Lake

The words of the famous song attributed to Lady Bai have become a common phrase to complain about the long-lasting rainfalls in the area. Students jokingly compose verses: “Lady Bai Suzhen, Xu Xian is not here, so please do not cry. We’ve washed our vestments for a week, shall you not give them time to dry in the sun?” A female classmate of mine says: “Hangzhou is a city made of water, with this rain do you not fear drowning it?” I smile as I think of my classmate worrying about the weather just as the person in ancient times thought the sky might fall.

Parasol Trees along

Beishan Road in Autumn

I love autumn of Beishan Road the most, and especially love the beautiful parasol trees along the road at the time. The lake reflects their golden leaves among the fading lotuses, and when the wind blows their leaves fall gracefully upon the ground. The trees before my eyes, branches intertwined, look like they are on fire, a mass of brown-yellow like a sky of fiery clouds. Their beauty isn’t one of desolation or wilting as one might normally think of the fall, but rather a vibrant, fiery life.

Leifeng Pagoda and Lady Bai

The Leifeng Pagoda is now quite modern; in current times nobody thinks of the “sun setting over Leifeng” and the historical significance or saga of the ravages of time. Instead, people come here to seek out Lady Bai, or the Lady of the White Snake. People don’t worry about how the Leifeng Pagoda looked in times past – as long as it is there, and it’s called Leifeng Pagoda, well, then Lady Bai and Xu Xian’s love a thousand years ago was real, as it is a famous site in the story.

The Girl’s Boat of the West Lake

If you take a boat on the West Lake, you should definitely try a kind of paddleboat called the “Girl’s Boat”. Whether it’s during a bright, sunlight day or rainy day with the hills shrouded in mist, taking one of these boats on the lake is a great way to enjoy the beautiful scenery upon the West Lake. At the aft of the boat, there is a girl with narrow long green sleeves, a white blouse decorated with blue flowers, and a blue scarf upon her head. It reminds one of the descriptions of beautiful maidens upon the waters of the West Lake in the Song Dynasty. These “Girl’s Boats” and paddleboats are a part of the uniquely beautiful scenery upon the West Lake.

The Mountains of the West Lake

There are two main kinds of mountains: the first are high-peaked mountains that are far from our noisy modern world, such as those in western Fujian, surrounded by clouds and mist all year long. They are beautiful, but we only rarely get glimpses of them. The second is the kind of mountain that surrounds the West Lake, with heights of a few dozen to less than five hundred metres. They afford nice view and are approachable. I prefer the latter kind of mountain. The more famous of the peaks around the West Lake, such as the Yanxia Peak, Phoenix Mountain, Mount Wu, Lingyin Mountain, Beigao Peak, Qixia Peak, Gem Mountain and the like are nourished by the water of the lake, delicately beautiful and elegant.

Other Names of the West Lake

The lake is situated in the west of the city, and is commonly known as the West Lake. Hangzhou was originally called Qiantang, and the lake was called the Qiantang Lake. Li Daoyuan of the Northern Wei Dynasty in his Commentary on the Waterways wrote that the lake outside of the Yongjin Gate had yellow cows appear, and thus it was called the Yellow Cow Lake. Su Shi compared the lake to famous classical beauty Xi Shi in his poem “The West Lake looks like the fair lady Xi Shi at her best. Whether she is richly adorned or plainly dressed.” It was then called Xi Zi Lake, or Lover’s Lake. It has also been known by a number of other names, which shows how popular it is.

Musical Fountains

I’ve seen a number of musical fountains, but none rivals that of Hangzhou. The one on the West Lake is multi-coloured, but not all the colours appear at once. The action of the fountain is synchronised with the music, elegant and enticing as wave after wave of bright water burst forth. The pillars of illuminated water resemble the lithe and graceful body of a skilled dancer, moving with the music, standing, reclining, kicking or bending, slowly or rapidly, making the lake scene look like a stage of its own. It’s no wonder so many people turn up to watch each day!

Sweet Osmanthus Rain

at Manjuelong Village

Hangzhou’s city flower – the osmanthus – is one whose fragrance any local person of Hangzhou will become intoxicated with. The best place to see and feel this is at Manjuelong village. Its name is from the Yuanxing Temple built during the Five Dynasties period, which was renamed Manjuelong (meaning “consummate consciousness”) during the Northern Song Dynasty. The ridges there are flanked with more than seven thousand osmanthus, and when there is plenty of dew, osmanthus flowers will fall off in great numbers, creating a “rain” of blooms. You will find your surroundings permeated by the scent of all kinds of osmanthus.
