The NY Bar Exam is Changing

On Tuesday, May 5, 2015, Jonathan Lippman, Chief Judge of the State of New York and Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals of New York announced the decision of the Court to adopt three changes to the New York admissions process effective with the July 2016 Bar Exam.

  • Adopt the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE). The UBE consists of the MBE, 6 MEE essays, and 2 MPTs.

  • Require New York candidates to complete a mandatory online course on New York law known as the "New York Law Course" (NYLC)

  • Require applicants to complete and pass an online, 50-question, multiple choice exam testing New York law, known as the "New York Law Exam" (NYLE).

New Admission Requirements

  • The present New York Multiple Choice section of the bar exam will be eliminated.

  • Each applicant must take an online New York Law Course (NYLC) consisting of several hours of videotaped lecture on New York law.

  • Each applicant must take and pass a separate, 50-question multiple choice exam, the NYLE covering content in the new NYLC.

New Scoring Requirements

  • MEE essays are written and provided by the NCBE (authors of the MBE and MPT) rather than the New York Board of Law Examiners (BOLE.)

  • Grading is done by NY BOLE graders, using grading rubrics provided by the NCBE.

  • New York will set its own passing score for the UBE, which is reported to be 266/400.
