PPJ 科学探索丨Jewels of the Bund 精彩回顾！

8月27日，PPJ会员们齐聚外滩八号（亨嘉汇投资俱乐部），跟随Patrick Cranley（柯炜文）老师行走上海，虽然老师是位外国人，但却是个十足的老上海通。

On August 27, long-time Shanghai resident Patrick Cranley led our group on an eye-opening tour of the Bund. Mr. Cranley founded Historic Shanghai in 1998 and is intimately familiar with all corners of the city.

Thanks to the support of our friends Ritchie and Jessica, we began the tour at the Shanghai Hengjiahui Entrepreneurs & Investors Club, a private club located on the former French Bund.

行程就从一座塔开始，柯炜文老师让大家猜一猜这座奇怪的塔以前的功能是什么？可惜大家都没猜到，答案是天气预报，那时候每种天气会有一个代表颜色的旗帜，插在塔上就等于告诉大家天气。

Our first stop was this unusual tower, where flags indicating the expected weather conditions would be flown so that ships at anchor in the Huangpu River could decide whether to sail that day or not.

除了这座塔，柯炜文老师还给大家讲了洋泾浜的故事，洋泾浜现在多用于形容外国人不标准的汉语，但当时洋泾浜只是一条河流，只不过这条河流附近有很多来经商的外国人，也就渐渐形成了这种用法。

Mr. Cranley told us that the creek separating the French Concession from the International Settlement's Bund was called the "Yang Jing Bang," or Foreigners Creek. Since that was where Shanghai residents and foreigners first mixed together, anything that is a combination of East and West has come to be known in Shanghai dialect as yangjingbang.

走几步就到了曾经的上海总会大楼，如今已是华尔道夫酒店。

Next on our route was the magnificent Waldorf Astoria Hotel Shanghai, which was once the Shanghai Club.

经过曾经的亚细亚大楼，中国通商银行大楼......

Many foreign trading companies and financial institutions once built their headquarters along the Bund.

来到了泰国盘谷银行上海分行和泰国驻沪领事馆。

We studied the unusual statue on the Bangkok Bank building, where the Thai Consulate in Shanghai is located.

乍一看就能知道这里和泰国有关，屋顶上挂着的泰国国旗，门上的典型泰国形象雕塑和泰文。但是大家都不知道这里曾经是电报大楼。

Mr. Cranley told us that this building was once the Great Northern Telegraph Co. Building.

柯炜文老师带领大家看了外滩这一条街上最老的建筑，它就藏在这幢曾经的招商局大楼的红砖之后。

The oldest building on the Bund is a two-story grey stone building hidden behind the distinctive red brick home of the China Merchants Steamship Navigation Co.

下一站就是上海浦东发展银行，也是曾今的汇丰银行大楼，虽然换了银行，但是当时的建筑和装修基本保留了下来。

No. 12, The Bund was built in 1923 as the Shanghai headquarters of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank. It is now the head office of Shanghai Pudong Development Bank.

顶上的壁画分别是八个分行的城市地标、十二星座和太阳神，既具有欣赏价值，又具有文化价值。

Thanks to one of our well-connected members, we were allowed to visit the interior of this well-preserved building. The magnificent ceiling mosaics were created by Italian craftsmen hired by HSBC in the early 1920s.

作为汇丰银行大楼的“姐妹楼”，海关大楼除了优雅的建筑外观，还有着沉重的历史，这里也是上海人民保安队总指挥部旧址。

回望这一路走来，飘扬着的各国国旗，感叹不愧是多国建筑博物馆。

The building next to the bank was once the Custom House. During the civil war in the late 1940s, employees who were also underground Communist Party members used equipment here to communicate with the their comrades in the People's Liberation Army. Revolutionary events are also part of The Bund's fascinating history.

行程的最后到达了和平饭店，走在优雅精致的和平饭店里，听着这里发生过的故事，了解着这里细致的设计，仿佛与这里也产生了些许共鸣。

Last but not the least, we had a wonderful tour of the Fairmont Peace  Hotel, with Mr. Cranley recounting stories of the many interesting characters associated with the building all the way back in the 1930s, when it was known as the Cathay Hotel.

We were also thrilled to visit the rooftop terrace of the hotel, which provides sweeping views of the Bund.

汇聚在和平饭店的咖啡店里，大家依旧不舍离别，吃着甜品、品着咖啡，继续与柯炜文老师进行着交流。

Gathering in the cafe at the end of our walk, members engaged in enthusiastic conversation with Mr. Cranley, who answered our questions about Shanghai's precious riverside avenue, the Bund.
