Postdoctoral Fellow / Junior Scientist position available at USAMRIID
Since 1969,U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) has served as the Department of Defense's (DoD) lead laboratory for medical biological defense research. While its core mission is to protect the warfighter from biological threats, USAMRIID also investigate disease outbreaks and threats to public health. Research conducted at USAMRIID leads to medicalsolutions—therapeutics, vaccines, diagnostics, and information—that benefit both military personnel and civilians.
A Postdoctoral fellowship of Junior Scientist (dependent on experience of candidate) is available in a clinical and translational immunology research group within the Medical Division of USAMRIID. The position will support domestic and international (Colombia, Uganda) clinical research projects.
Scope: Develop and execute research studies designed to detect pathogen exposure in clinical samples; develop pathogen-specific assays; and assess the immunological response to identified infectious agents. Studies will be primarily in vitro(e.g.; plaque assays, ELISPOT, ELISA) with possible extension into in vivo(small animal) models of disease.
Ideal candidates will have a PhD in Immunology, Molecular Biology, or Microbiology with expertise in T cell biology and molecular assays. Position will require the application of multidisciplinary approaches to sample analysis: flowcytometry, ELISPOT, FLOUROSPOT, protein expression, serological screening assay development, pseudovirion production. Experience with antibody characterization(functional assays, including neutralization, ADCC, CDC; competition assays and epitope mapping) and molecular biology (RT-PCR, transcriptomics) is highly desirable.Potential candidates will have the option to work directly with biosafety level3 and 4 pathogens (e.g.; Ebola, VEEV). Incumbent should be a self-starter with excellent communication and organization skills. Position will require independent thinking, flexibility, and a true passion for discovery.
Ongoing projects include the following:
1. Analysis of convalescent samples from subjects in Colombia with previous infection with chikungunya and Zika viruses. Focus is on understanding the contribution of the theadaptive immune response to the long-term consequences of infection (arthralgia and Guillain-Barré syndrome, respectively).
2. A febrile illness surveillance project in Colombia, with specific interest in encephalitic infections; assessment of disease exposure in the context of the recent Colombian Peace Accord; and the impact of immigration from Venezuela on public health outcomes in Colombia.
3. An ongoing sepsis observational study in Uganda, in collaboration with the Austere environments Consortium for Enhanced Sepsis Outcomes (ACESO). Focus is detection of pathogen exposure and subsequent immunological assessment of host response to detected pathogens.
4. A clinical trial capability project, which has as its purpose the execution of a Phase II therapeutics clinical trial during an Ebola virus outbreak in Uganda (JointMobile Emerging Diseases Intervention Clinical Capability, JMEDICC).
5. Vaccine clinical trials executed at USAMRIID to test subject immune response to vaccines(yellow fever virus, chikungunya virus, VEE, EEE, WEE). Tasks include sample analysis, including assay optimization and standardization.
Qualifications:
Ph.D. in as cience discipline with Immunology or Molecular Biology preferred
3+ years’experience in immunology, infectious disease and/or diagnostics preferred
Demonstrable competence in assay development and troubleshooting
Scientific writing skills, to support writing project technical reports and presentations
Outstanding communication and organizational skills
Position requires work at the BSL-2, 3 and 4 level, therefore, must maintain enrollment in the BPRP program (background check, US citizenship)
Travelapproximately0-25%, negotiable
Spanish language skills desirable
